If it sounds like bacon your doing good. If you got the time to stop down I can give you the book I have and you can pick up the armrest that Jeff wants for his JK.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Hell yeah it sounds like bacon! Practicing a bit today I feel pretty good about my beginner welds. I've been welding 1/4" flat stock to a piece of 1/8" plate and doing pretty good. I obviously don't get crazy penetration on the 1/4" but it's okay on the 1/8". I've been practicing laying really short beads since that's what i'm going to do on my body mount is just lay 3 short beads per side and take it to Ross to finish it. Just with one 1/2" bead I have to separate the two with a pry bar. Tomorrow I'm going to practice welding 1/8" to 1/8" in the kind of joint that i'll be looking at for the body mount and having a go at it.

You can help it penetrate the 1/4" better by directing the tip towards it, making sure the tip is close to it (typically about 3/8" between the surface and the tip), and by hesitating longer on the 1/4". When joining two thicknesses like that I'll usually use a basic crescent or C pattern, and hold on the 1/4" longer than the 1/8". You'll get a feel for it and should be able to see when you're getting good penetration.

What are you using for a welder?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

It's a lincoln sp-100 so i'm not expecting to penetrate deep into the 1/4". Like you said when I was welding on it I spent more time on the 1/4" than the 1/8". I'm using a zig zag motion to sow the metal together basically. I heard a zig zag is better when using flux core since you don't reenter the weld puddle which is contaminated with the flux. But if that's a bunch of BS I wouldn't know any better.

Maybe it's just me but I don't think any of us are in line for needing an atlas. You're throwing 2k at a transfer case going into a jeep maybe worth 2k itself. I think money is much better spent else where. Honestly if everything else on your jeep is well in order and everything else in your life for that matter is in order go for it. Personally, if I had 2k, I would put it in my savings account. I would rather have money towards a house than put it into my jeep. I try to spend only a few hundred at a time on my jeeps.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm up and it's going on my 3rd week with poison ivy that is not subsiding. I woke up this morning and it's spread to my hands WTF. I just took another benedryl and then put on a bunch of benedryl cream and the last time I did that it made me sick. But from what I can remember it made me sick BUT not itchy.
