THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Bill, any comments on the mounts I posted?
Wow, sorry I missed that. I just thought the rotary table thing was another random post like this whole thread is. Haha.

So... My name is Bill and I'll comment on the brackets. :D
Very nice. Very very nice. I think it would work excellent. The only issue I see with it is that is would be a lot of work to get the round section right so that it is the right fit. And you'd need to make sure you get ample weld surface or the bracket won't do an entire lot.

Do it, or better yet write up some code for a CNC to do it (or at least make a second set) and you'll be able to make some good cash selling them. I'll bet you could get $90 easy for them.

my name's not bill... but... i'm going to throw another .02 at it. why not cut the stock mount off and build it up straight from the bumper? no need to do anything crazy that way... just get some tie in brackets (like i did from jcr :D) and plate the side of the crush zone and weld it all to hell. if that makes sense... i think it would just be easier to cut the ARB mounts off and start over...

you don't even have to buy them, but i did because for the time and effort saved and frustration of getting just that small amount of 1/4" plate i thought it was worth it.
Shhh... overkill is where it is at.
Some of us enjoy spending time and overdoing things. Havn't you learned anything yet? :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i dunno, i was just thinking in terms of simplicity. but yeah, i'm sure it would work... it turns into a gray area when you use the school's stuff to create something you're selling though.

I think it would be just as strong (if not stronger), simpler, and less time consuming to start over with new mounts as well. Use some 1/4" (or heck even 5/16" or 3/8") and do what you mentioned.
I also want to see it done for the shear coolness. ;)

Good point.

Isn't there someone that already sells new mounts for the ARBs?

I seem to remember hearing something about reinforcement plates for them to "remove" the crumple zones and tie them into more mounting points. Can't remember where I heard about them though.

you wanna see "for the sheer coolness", just watch me n my sawzall :gag:

Oh, I don't know if that would be coolness, but it'll sure be sheer "something else". :D

Leave it whole till after NAC-Fest. You know you want to wheel, although maybe it is just me wanting you to wheel so I have something to do with wheeling.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

haha yeah. i don't blame ya wanting me to wheel...i certainly want to too!! but, as awesome as that would be, i don't even want to put a time limit or restriction or deadline or whatever, on any of it at all, would rather just do it as i go, when it's done, it's done ya know. "done", of course. not DONE. ;)

not to mention that the cost of wheeling nacfest is somewhat overwhelming, also. i mean, i might be able to get ahold of a truck/trailer for the weekend, but either way, fuel, camping, park costs, food etc etc...it wouldn't be a cheap weekend... blah. we'll see... i'll leave it whole until mostly everything else is done, and when its time for either the cage or the tires, we'll see how close nacfest is, if it hasn't already passed us by at that point in time

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

you two must really want me to go so you have something to do with wheeling too, because right now out of the 3 of us, mine is the only one that drives.

You figured out the secret. :bawl:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

off to ricerzone to get crap for a tuneup

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't want to cut the mounts out because the ARB mounts are pretty weird. They kind of attach to the winch cradle, and both the front, upper, and lower surfaces of the bumper. Also, the winch mounts to the front of the bumper, at 90 degrees to all the other bumpers where the winch "sits" on the bumper, having the bolts mount up through the bumper into the winch.

Here are some pics. Damn its getting rusty under there.

I'm just a little hesitant to cut off the ARB mounts.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I slapped on a gladiator grille on the Honchenstein today and it looks awesome. In like 20 minutes I ripped off the plastic piece of junk and bolted the Gladiator on.

Maybe it's my love of welding, tendency for overkill, or both...but it looks like the bumper is barely attached to the mounts. And all of it looks so thin...

I'd pick up some of the same thickness as whats there to scab in where you want to extend it back, then take 3/16" plate and weld it all the way from the inside of the bumper back as far as you extended the scab plate. That crumple zone and a few rosette holes will give you plenty of weld area.

Probably couldn't hurt to brace the inside of the bumper face some as well. That lower edge of the face likes to dent/bend when you drop on something solid.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i agree with everything nhrocker says. mark, it ur hesitant to remove the old mounts and start from scratch, id jsut plate over everything existing with 3/16". extend the mounts back a little bit to get the steering bolts and that big hole just behind those. kill two birds with one stone, better bumper mounts and steering box braces. once everythnig behind the face is reinforced, cut a hole in the face and put some 3/4" or 1" thick stock for a d-ring mount.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i think i'm with rob. again. he gave me the idea i'm going with for my bumper too. :worship:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

damn its fing cold outside, gonna take me forever to do a tune up

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

plugs, wires and tsat are done, still need to do oilchange, cap&rotor

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

the bumper has d-ring tabs but still has crappy mounting points...
