Picked it up today. '99 2 door, 4.0/AW4/231 x-government XJ. Engine/t-case/gas tank skids, tranny cooler, and NO front tow hooks, weird. I had to get towed half way home...

Rocker panels are rotted, and the PO backed into something, denting the passenger side quarter panel, but other than that, its a good DD.

Oh boy... did you get that from Peter in West Roxbury for really cheap?
I looked at that Jeep a month or so ago for my gal and turned it down. There was way to many things wrong with it for me to even consider it.
I don't think he some much backed into something as go hit kinda hard in that corner cause the driver's door didn't line up right (hinge could have be part of that issue, but it was the line at the top that worried me) and the hatch was not even.

It started really hard (no big deal I think it was the MAP and/or IAC), radiator had some issues, coolant was FULL of rust, one of the freeze plugs was on its way out, exhaust needed work, rockers where shot in the back and would need full replacement, interior was kinda trashed, rear wiper no worky, tires shot and need replacement, plus kinda high miles at 153K+.

All in all they were all kinda small issues, but I also didn't like some of the things his wife was telling me so I passed. Would have been a good deal and I probably would have purchased it if it was not for the hit in the pass rear and the rocker rot.

Good Luck with it if it is the Jeep I looked at!

Ha, ya Bill it was the same Jeep. He was asking $995 for it, but I picked it up for $600.
He said the radiator was just replaced.

I still have my old stock tires, so I'm going to double check that they are still good, and put those on. The driver seat does have a tear, but other than that it just needs a good cleaning.

It drove fine from West Roxbury down to Plymouth, until it started stalling. When I was taking it for a test drive, it ran out of gas, so I'm thinking that stuff got stirred up maybe, and clogged the fuel filter?

Hopefully you have good luck for it. I told him I would take it for $700 and he told me he wouldn't go that low and I passed after thinking about it. I guess he got tired of looking at it. :roflmao:

I think something is messed up with the IAC because of the starting issue as well. If I kept my foot in it a little (just about 1000-1100rpm) it had no problems. Then again I didn't have it running for very long probably only 10min.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I actually think thats an alternator issue. Happened on my friends TJ, and its happened to my green XJ. One time back in high school we couldn't get my friends TJ started from jumping it. Got it towed to our mechanics, and he said it had to do with the alternator not being able to recharge the battery as fast, so the engine couldn't keep running until the battery had enough charge.

If I need to jump my Jeep, I need to keep my foot on the gas for a little while, or else it will stall. Everything works fine after it.

Oh, I also think the battery might have been original, when we were talking we said it might need a new battery. When I first started stalling, I ran down the battery trying to restart it, so we picked up a new one. When I pulled out the old one, it still had a Chrysler logo on the side.

Hmm... could be I didn't even think to look into that.
Then again a new alternator would be more than an IAC, so I'd hope for one of over the other.

What are you plans for the rocker rot and the interior?
I was gonna just swap the interior with mine as I've got good seats. Only issue was mine are grey and that interior is tan. Heck, I just pulled them out today if you want them let me know and we'll work out a deal. The drivers side is power and you can have all the wiring if ya need it.

Overall it looks like you got a good deal if you can put up with the little things. My gal wanted something a little nicer so it was out with the money I'd have to put into it bringing it back to "her standards". Haha...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

well, i just read all the 20 pages or so that i missed in the last few days.

about bill's 96- skid, i got the same one from travis and fit it to my 98. if you cut off the back curved up lip it bolts right on. pics when i'm not lazy.

bill- what are you up to tomorrow late afternoon/evening?

in other news, i got back from NY with jenn a few hours ago. we left amherst on the 1st around 11 and got to new haven, ct just on time to catch our train and then got to NYC around 3ish. i've never been to the icty before but she had a few times... we did the usual sightseeing stuff and tourist crap. i'm not a big tourist usually, but it was fun. my christmas present to her was orchestra seating to chicago on broadway. the show was pretty good too. we stayed at the roosevelt hotel which is less than a block away from the back of grand central station, i would highly recommend it based on price and convenience for someone not looking to drive or take the subway. all in all, nothing went wrong, which is as much as can be asked of a trip to NY...

oh, and my 4.56 are still making a hell of a whine. next week when i change the fluid i'm gonna run a pattern and see what it looks like. if it sucks, i might cut my losses and get new everything and redo it/have it redone.

tech question: if i have put ~500 miles on gears that potentially somewhat misaligned, are the gears themselves boned? or does that depend on to what level they are misaligned?

sorry for the long post. gonna go watch a movie. i'll be more active in this week when i go back to work hehe i've been too busy doing real life stuff.

oh yeah- i got another pair of 33s from billy and had them mounted to my cragars along with my other pair (that i got from travis in the summer) and i'm DDing on my 33s. anyone have any idea what the % error from stock final drive ratio is on 33s with 4.56 and ax-15?

Looks like Mark would take it then... he's just gotta let me know.

Nothing but working on the Jeep. Did you want to swing by?

Sounds like a good time. I'm not a fan of the city though...

I still think it is because you used Genuine Gears.
From what you told me on the phone I don't think you did anything wrong.

Depends... you'd have to check the pattern and the wear.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ya, the problem with the seats are, these are fold down, so I'd have to find them from another 2 door. I might just get some cheap ass autozone seat covers, or just deal with the rip, doesn't matter. Other than that, I think some Armor All wipes, and a good vacuuming.

I just wanted something that I can drive to my co-op job, I'm not too sure how the company will feel with my green XJ parked in the lot, its a small place.

I might just leave the rot right now, do you need in tact rockers for inspection? If so, bondo might be in order for temp fix. I guess I could always order some replacement skins, and then just weld them in sometime.

Oh, and Bill, ya I'll take the skid.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I am pissed I sold my old sport rims now. I don't like the rims on this what so ever. I did find some rims with tires on for $125, but its all the way up near Haverhill.

Ya... thaat wouldn't go over with my gal. It might, but it would probably bother me in a DD too.

AH, I see now. I was wondering why you'd want another.

If you are going through all that work, why not just use some 2x4 or 2x6 and make some rockers. Or, heck mine are in perfect shape when I cut them out I'll be careful and you can have them.
Oh, and Bill, ya I'll take the skid.
Cool. Do you want me to bring it to the M&G?

Haha... damn I sold mine as well not to long ago.

Ya, I'll see how long it takes before it makes me mad. I have a feeling duct tape might be in order.

Ya I thought that. I was actually thinking about using some 2x4 and cutting out the rockers on the green XJ. I'm probably just going to leave the rot for now, if anything happens to the 4 door, I'll replace the rockers with some 2x4 and I already have quarter panel armor I can cover the dented rear with, and the I'll just swap everything.

Sure, that would be good.

I kept mine for soo long too, cause I didn't want to get rid of them, then I finally got rid of them not too long ago.
