THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

I can't wait to hear about all the crazy shit that's happened to you since we've talked last

Not much.

3 inspection tickets and an exhaust ticket in the red XJ. 2 inspection tickets on the mass pike driving home from work, followed by an exhaust ticket on the pike. Two were from the same cop, he had a major hardon for that POS.

Another inspection ticket one block from home because another cop decided I looked suspicious in such a nice (ha) neighborhood in such a shitty car, then justified the stop with an inspection ticket.

Lived paycheck to paycheck for a looong time while catching up on bills and paying off debts. I still have a couple to go but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Threw together a custom Subaru motor, drove to upstate NY in the jeep on a Sunday, installed it in a $300 shitcan Forester I bought with no motor, drove the Forester home with the XJ's plates on it. Wednesday morning (yes, 3 days later) I got pulled over on the way to work for yet another inspection sticker ticket. I was within the 7 day grace period for registration so running the swapped plates was legal, and hadn't even started the 7 day inspection grace period, but didn't have my paperwork in order so they threw the book at me, 2 felony charges and yet another inspection sticker ticket, then destroyed my plates and impounded the Subaru. Oh, that was 15 minutes after I checked the mail for the first time in a few weeks and got the notice that I was two days from the start of a 60 day license suspension from all the inspection tickets, basically the same boat Colin994 was in. Guess what, someone with a DUI charge can get a cinderella license, but someone with inspection sticker tickets and exhaust tickets can't. I ended up living in my parents spare bedroom like a goddamn highschooler and fixing everything they own (almost literally) in exchange for rides to work.

Got all the charges thrown out easily (magistrate was very impressed by the fact that I had it insured less than an hour after being cited, registered within days, and inspected on time) and one of the other inspection tickets thrown out, finished my suspension and got my license back.

Being so damn broke from paying off debts that you can't afford to buy a new ride that'll pass inspection while the old one's being a cursed piece of shit and breaking something new every time you fix the last thing it would have failed for is a hell of a thing. I had two choices, roll the dice every day on not getting an inspection ticket and make it to work, or not go to work and get fired. That's not much of a choice, so I rolled the dice, and lost.

So yeah, last year ****ing sucked, at least the last few months of it did. Mostly back on my feet again now, have money in the bank and paying down the last few debts I have, building jeeps is probably on the back burner for the foreseeable future however.

Oh, I will probably finish fixing the five ton and register it this year even so, because I got some great info on an insurance company that will work with me on not needing the vehicle to be garaged to get antique insurance (cheap) and antique registration (also cheap.) I figure it'll make a good backup commuting vehicle. :wow:

Best post in this thread all year

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

How do you get pulled over that many times for an inspection sticker? That is sadly impressive.
Good to have you back posting again.

House progress?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

The worst ****ing luck on the planet is how. I have no idea. The worst part is that the one that happened 1 block from my house was 1 block past the driveway. If I'd just pulled into the driveway instead of going around back, I wouldn't have gotten it.

The month when I was too broke to even buy a new stock muffler or tailpipe to put on the XJ, and drove it with no exhaust past the cat? Not a single citation. Once I put an exhaust on it? Hammered with tickets.

House progress... nothing since my last pics on facebook. I've gotten a million times better at doing brick pointing due to fixing an entire corner of my parents foundation so when we get a thaw I'll probably start work on some of that. Put up half the new joists for the master bedroom and poured my first concrete in below-freezing weather, it came out great but I haven't been back to put the new wall on top of it because my dad's Ranger blew its motor due to extreme neglect just when I was about to go back home, and it's been a disaster prepping the new motor to go in.

How's things with you guys? I haven't really been around much for months or keeping track of this thread.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

Holy hell...and here my plan is to just drive my race rig around anyway, with no intent of getting it inspected, because the worst that happens is a $50 fix-it ticket...

I went out of my way to incorporate a blinker circuit into the new wiring. Actually: because I'm using LED's, I built-in a 5-wire to 4-wire trailer converter between the brake light switch and a dash-mounted (manually operated) turn signal switch. No it's not operational yet, and yes, that means the blinkers operate by knocking a momentary toggle switch repeatedly to one side. That's where I quit thinking about it; once that works maybe I'll try to incorporate a solid-state flasher.

If I'm gonna get pulled over, I'm at least going to make sure it's only an equipment violation and not a moving one.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

That's the thing, up here in this bullshit state, an inspection ticket is a moving violation, thus a surchargeable event. So is an equipment violation (my exhaust ticket.) The second they run your plates, the computer tells them it's not inspected. Get 7 of them in 3 years (or in combination with any other kinds of moving violations) and they hang your ass out to dry for 60 days.

I needed a drink after I checked what those surcharges are costing me every year on my insurance. It's not pretty.

I'm done driving uninspected shitcans... I've graduated to inspected shitcans.

BTW, my offer of dry vinyl tape for your harness project is still valid. I'm literally never going to use all of this :spin1:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

My biggest concern about driving it on the street is whether I'm going to need to swap the 1.5:1 steering quickener out for the straight rod I built. Turns an otherwise stock XJ box into 2.1 turns lock-to-lock, which is a great racing ratio but might invoke a bit of sneeze n' swerve on the road...

I'm not taping the whole thing...I'm using braided expandable loom stuff, the split kind. With the Holley computer and universal harness they gave me a shit ton of it for wires I'm not using (which is a good thing, because that stuff is actually almost $1/ft).

I've been only using the friction-tape kinda stuff as well because I like the way it lays down better than vinyl tape and I'm only using it sparingly...it's adhesive-lined heat shrink, small cable ties, and the split loom everywhere else.

I acquired an entire assortment of Ancor marine-grade wiring stuff from a dead boat guy, which is what I've been using. Also came with one of those battery lug crimpers that you use a hammer or vise with, kind with the spring-loaded rocker arm with the crimping spikes on it and slots on the base. Never woulda guessed how much that thing actually costs but it works great. Few hits with a mini sledge and 1/0 cable is stuck in there good.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

Things I've learned from a popular Rover forum in the past couple days (which may I ask, kind of prides itself on being known as the "Pirate4x4 of LR forums":

-Weld on D-Ring tabs will rip off your bumper, it is better to use bolt on tabs, which leads to the next point
-Grade 5 bolts are ok for mounting your winch bumper and recovery point
-No one can fabricate bumpers equal to or better than ones you can purchase
-you can't feel the difference between cheap shocks and fox shocks unless you are desert racing

Adamn, Jeff, etc. On a stock Jeep, are the control arm bushings that press into the upper control arm mount on the axle the same as the ones that are listed as pressing into the rear of the arm?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread aka North America Home Owners Association Thread

Switched my insurance from Progressive to Esurance, dropped it by $252 a year. The last speeding ticket I had (Sept of 2012) made the Esurance quote jump by $460 a year. That's a tough penalty for 16 over. Got to behave and make sure that falls off.

YO, if you have one of those cyber insurance companies how do you like register a car and shit and whatnot. I pay like $800 a year but I go to someplace in my town and I can give them $20 and they go to the RMV for me.
