I've ridden Dan's older DR350 which has about the same power numbers but in a platform that's about 50 pounds heavier. Had more than enough power to scare me. You have other suggestions?

except not really....they're probably wicked awesome, but, a friend just bought a brandy new '14. Hadn't even ridden it yet, it fell over in the yard last night and broke the handguard and the lever/cracked the master cylinder assembly. So much for "race ready" :laugh: I told him that story makes me feel much better about riding my tank of an xr400....and owning it outright. Eff payments on a dual sport or dirtbike.

CRF250's are popping up for around $2k all day. Doesn't look like you can get anywhere near a KTM for that money.
And I started on a Yamaha TTR230, so any more serious bike is going to be a major improvement.

all factual. I dunno how much riding you've done, but personally I love my xr. It's heavy and sucks to start after I dump it, but I LOVE that I *can* dump it, anywhere, into/onto anything, and it just takes it like a boss. I would have wrecked so many radiators by now it's not funny. I plan to keep it until I'm good enough to ride the shit out of it, and then I'll look for a Husaberg/Husqvarna/KTM 300 or 450...

I had like a 6 month period where Dan, Patch and I were riding all the ****ing time, which was awesome. I went from being a little overwhelmed by riding to having pretty decent control of the TTR. Obviously, that doesn't make up for years of experience, but I'm definitely ready for something bigger and faster than the TTR (which had the airbox gutted, rejetted, etc), especially since Dan and Patch were so much faster.

doubt it. to be honest i'll probably be planning on riding my dirtybike instead if its decent weather. No mo jeep, no mo spending money on fuel to get down there, taking time off work, paying camping, paying park fees, blah blah....
