Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread
LOL
It looks like I may be on the hunt for a 30 again. I went down to the basement to start working on the one Billy gave me and, well, it was worth what I paid for it...
Took the carrier out. Found a handful of chunks of exploded axleshaft in the area between one carrier bearing and the seal. A chunk the size of a pea was jammed in between the carrier bearing race and the housing, under a carrier bearing cap. I have no idea how that could have gotten in there but it can't be good.
Carrier bearing caps were swapped and bolted on upside down. I suspect that was from when the locker came out of it, so no damage, just funny. Protip: almost all dana 30 bearing caps are stamped with identifying marks from the factory, in this case, they were Hs. One is right side up, the other is sideways. To get the bearing caps on facing the right way around just clean the RTV off the gasket surface and match the orientation mark on the housing with the orientation mark on each bearing cap. This can also tell you if someone has previously swapped on the bearing caps from another housing.
So far, nothing too bad, or unfixable... then I looked at the carrier and said to myself "why is that carrier bearing so far out from the carrier?"
One carrier bearing is pressed on hand-loose, it slides around by itself and the shims came out from under it in pieces. :roflmao: looks like it's collateral damage from an exploded axleshaft beating the shit out of the carrier bearing journal. I pulled the bearing off and I can feel the ridge where the carrier bearing spun on the carrier instead of the rollers rolling.
If I can find my spare stock carrier I might just throw some cheap carrier bearings on it, reset the backlash/preload, and run it.
Not complaining, he gave me the damn thing for free, it's just funny as hell and I wish I'd noticed sooner. Sheep did a good job and beat this axle just enough to use every bit of life it had, but not enough to get stranded.
edit: found spare carrier, looks like I'm half-setting-up some gears.
