THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The rocker panel on my green jeep that has rocker protection on it was dented at NACfest. It was when I was coming down the rocks where you dropped the rock on your finger, the guard dented and pushed up the rocker.

And the rockers that mount to the rail and pinch seam DON'T do that?

yaaaa.

ask liberty trail in penrose, co. my rocker gaurds kept my rockers looking great, too bad they managed to shrink my door opening by an inch or so. but like sam said, this stuff is for everyone from mall crawlers to weekend warriors. people who are stupid like us need more protection.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My rockers were annihilated, even with the AJ's Rails.

As Sam said, i'm not sure the normal person wheeling is going to drop off a 3 ft. ledge directly on the rocker. I like the look of the JCR rockers.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So maybe I'm missing something but it always seems like there are a bunch of KOH competitors that slap buggies together at the absolute last second.

Seems like a recipe for disaster to me.
sounds like a recipe for AWESOME

rocks wont break KOH rigs, the only way youll break on the hammers (from what my limited knowledge has seen/realized) unless youre being an idiot. either by running 37s locked on a D44 with stock axles and a SBC, or by leaving your foot planted trying to climb something and you roll 3 times.

the desert breaks your shit. every time. so you can really test your weak links unless you can sustain 80+ mph for an extended period off road.

and from the EMC, it seems like all the dudes running strokers were like "OK WE GOT IT RUNNING FOR 5 MINUTES ITS GOOD TO GO!" then go race with it and it explodes and they cant figure it out. with the right gearing, a stock 4.0 can hold speed in the desert. sure, you wont be the fastest guy out there but we ALL know how the 4.0s DGAF about being revved the hell out. i've had my old jeep at 100+ (albeit on road, but hey, it was almost 5k rpms) for 10 minutes at a time driving out west. no issue whatsoever.

10 minutes lol

I had my old jeep pinned at 5250 in second gear for over two hours at one point on its final trip. Rev limiter was so slow it sounded like I was taking my foot off the pedal. I don't even remember the last time I had changed the oil in it, either.

In its last few months I barely ever drove it without keeping it tached out. I put at least 10 hours of 5200rpm operation on it, in long stretches, no bad noises or oil pressure issues. Really wish I could have found a way to keep that motor, it was a good one. I think my favorite was when I went wheeling with tim and mason, I left late and there were sketchy people hanging around so I brought my trailer with me, was doing 90+ in second gear the whole way, then did the same thing on the way back.

I can't kill a 4.0. The only thing I've managed to do is make them fall out of the truck.

On the other hand I am pretty sure I know why my transmission exploded.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

put water in it

My jeep is not a submarine... I think that would kill it though.

I do put water in the 98, because it is eating coolant at this point. Doesn't seem to be getting into the oil so I will keep driving it till I have a chance to swap the motor.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken - how many spare motors do you have at this point? I'm going to need one sooner than later and figured you might have a few laying around that you might want to sell off. :laugh3:

I get giddy when I think about our jeeps exploding side by side as we're barfing out our windows and giving each other high fives. Of course we'll die, but dying as the two coolest men in all of the jeep kingdom. WORTH IT.

Can't XXXXing wait bricks will be shiat

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I don't actually have any usable motors other than my emergency spare and the one going in the 98 :( why do you think your motor is on the way out?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Im really curious why he thinks it needs to be replaced though. 4.0s are, like, impossible to kill, unless you don't oil them, don't cool them, and/or try to feed them water.

The terrible noises that I thought might be from the transmission? They weren't from the transmission.

I'm going to do another oil change in my engine and seafoam the shit out of it to see if that helps at all but after that I think I'll just swap motors. I mean... the transmission has to come out again anyway so I can swap the bellhousing. And the motor mounts are pretty shot. So I figure I'll just pull the engine/trans together, replace the engine, replace the motor mounts, replace the bellhousing, and put it all back together as a unit.

The only other option is that the sounds are coming from the t-case but I (and my friends) definitely think it sounds like they are coming from the front of the vehicle.

Scott I still have Travis's old motor you can have for free.

Sweet, thanks! I'm assuming it ran alright when pulled? I'll try and borrow a trailer to pick it up sooner than later depending when your going to be around.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Doesn't it only make them with the clutch in? Sounds like a crank thrust bearing to me. Slap a new bottom end bearing kit in it and keep driving it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

As far as I know it ran fine when pulled.

It's been sitting all wrapped up outside near our tool shed.

I would definitely throw some gaskets at it before you dump it in, but other than that I would think it's fine.

I'll be around all day Friday and Sunday, whenever you feel like coming to get it.

No, makes the sound with the clutch in and out. Actually makes the noises worse when the clutch is out (regardless of whether it's in gear or not).

The noise is the worst while cruising around with little load on the engine. E.g. driving at 2500 RPMs at constant throttle. If I start accelerating or let off the throttle with the trans in gear the sound isn't as bad.

It also sounds bad if you rev it too high, somewhere in the 3-4k+ range.

Alright. I planned to throw it on the engine stand and give it a good once-over anyway so gaskets were on the to-do list. I will probably stop by on Sunday if I can find a trailer. Though do you think we'd be able to just chunk it in the back of the XJ (I haven't tossed a 4.0 around in ages)? if I can sort out my death wobble issues (hoping balljoints solve that) I can definitely be there Sunday with the Jeep regardless of whether I get a trailer or not.
