THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

And I don't plan on jumping it. A lot easier to flop when crawling since I don't plan on totally beating the shit out of my MJ (again no cage).
all of this alot easier said then done, looking forward to watching everyone beat the shit out of there jeeps at fc maybee after that ill have said XXXX it and pour all my money into mine and be wheelin end of month

3 of 4 rock rings painted, need to buy more paint, kinda silly putting this much time into somthin thats gonna get mashed first time out

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Passenger side motor mount bolts broke, oil filter hit the frame rail, puking oil out from somewhere in that area. It also pinched the battery cable against the frame at a perfect sharp spot to ground it out and completely melt the terminal end off the battery cable.

Fun time, other than that.

In theory I'm going to Big Dogs in two weeks, running the Line Mtn 7-miler the weekend after that, and then I'll finally be able to say XXXX it and quit patching this XXXXing thing back together.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm stopping by Harbor Freight on my way home from work to grab a right-angle drill, to try end extract the broken motor mount bolts from the block. Guess I'll attempt that and try to figure out WTF is going on with the oil filter/adapter etc.

I'm not pulling the motor to fix the bolts. If I have to do that, like I've said, the whole drivetrain and front axle/suspension has to come out too. And I'm only gonna do that once.

how many bolts were they held on by?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Four bolts, added one extra over the factory mount:

How fun does that look to fix?

There's one that's still kinda loosely attached, I think. Unless it just hasn't fallen completely out yet. The bolts attaching the driver side mount to the frame horn almost pulled completely through the base plate of the motor mount.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

So I guess my parent's house on the cape lost power yesterday afternoon, after the storm mind you, and are not expected to have it back until late afternoon on Saturday.

i do believe brown dog is 4 on that side and like 7 on the other side. guess it isnt as bombproof of a setup as they claim.

WAH!

i lost power sunday morning and we are expected to get it back by next monday or tuesday

Just curious, did you end up using lock washers or loctite on those bolts?

I know those pics are during fab.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I thought FC was 9/9-11. Not this weekend. Or am I on crack?

I want to go but I has no seat.

you're right 9.9-11

don't worry about a seat you big baby. you can walk waynes world no problem and keep up with everyone. it's all loops that lead back to the same central area, and you can take shortcuts through the trees etc etc. STFU and use you awesome hiking equipment you love so much :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

That fix looks like it's going to suck Chris.

Of course that whole side of the engine bay is completely covered in oil too.

I guess I'll degunk it first so I can actually see what's going on.

If I can get to them, I think the bolts should come out pretty easily...they were probably loose. I tightened them that morning but I was really gettin it...who knows.

There's a noticeable bend in the driver side 2x5x1/4" rocker. By far the hardest hit I've ever taken in a vehicle...I'm sure that knocked some stuff loose.

Yeah, the other side has a lot more holes to work with:

The only other thing I've seen done on the passenger side is to extend the mounting plate forward to use the ignition coil studs.

Sounds like what happened to mine with my earthquake scale deathwobble. I swapped the motor, hell with trying to get a drill in there, especially because the damn bolts broke (the ones that didn't rip the bosses off the block, that is) at an angle and are harder than the casting, so all the drill bit did was walk sideways and really piss me off. Of course my motor was bone stock so I didn't lose anything.

Instead of shredding the oil filter, mine raped the alternator with one of the bolts holding my recovery hook bracket on.

Brown dog super mounts have 8 on the pass side (I'm holding one right now, haven't bothered to install it yet) - captures the stock 3, 1 below and behind the stock pattern, plus the two by the stock ignition coil location and the two for the alternator bracket. I'm not sure how much real strength the front four add, but the other two certainly add something. IMO the one below and behind adds the most since the lower bolts are in tension while the uppers are mostly just locating posts unless you get a massive amount of downward acceleration / upward force on the motor suddenly.

hokay.

There was loctite on them at some point, but after seeing coolant temps at close to 300 degrees, I don't know how effective it is anymore. The fact that I tightened them just before the race leads me to believe it's somewhere between "slightly" and "not at all".

If you notice, I'm using all YJ bracketry so the alternator is higher...I would've preferred the alternator get mangled in this case. I hate dealing with that XXXXing right angle oil filter adapter piece.*

I have a set of reverse drill bits for extracting broken bolts...if they're as loose as I'm guessing, I'll just need the bit to bite a little bit and they'll unscrew the rest of the way out, or at least enough to get vice grips on.

*what's funny is if you notice in the pic above, that angle adapter wasn't installed...a YJ doesn't need/use it. I got as far as dropping the motor in and getting the mounts lined up before realizing that there's no way to remove the oil filter without that piece.

Yeah, the alternator was a rather good thing to have catch the hit. I jacked the motor back up off it and a few minutes of driving later, the windings had "self clearanced" well enough that it actually charged the battery while I limped the truck home  - it had some pretty awesome arc marks all over when I pulled it out.

Good luck with the bolts, I hope they broke flatter than mine did. And you're probably smarter than I am and will use a center punch before starting to drill :dunce: mine were just a bitch and I pretty much said screw it, I'm tossing a new-to-me $160 motor in and calling it a day.

I'm unsure whether I'll even be able to fit a right-angle drill attachment and drill bit in there. HTF do you expect me to use a center punch and hammer?
