Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

And THe NAC Lots-O-Bitch Thread returns. :rattle:

Seriously, y'all seem to be getting worse lately. Pull the damn string out and quit whining, suck it up, and stay up til 2 AM every night to do the stuff you can't do while you're at work.

Rant off. :D

yea yea. my saturday night = :D i'm extremely satisfied with my weekend.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

In other news.

Picked up my cylinder head from the machine shop on Saturday afternoon...after a hot tank dip, magnaflux, and straight-edge check, turns out there was nothing wrong with the casting at all. Three out of six intake valves were leaking pretty badly so my guy re-ground the valves & seats and polished the stems where they'd gotten a little tarnished...otherwise he said it looked beautiful. Resurfaced the bottom just as a precaution and called it good.

Dropped it back on the motor that day with a new Mopar Performance head gasket (man that thing is nice, 4 layers of riveted steel shim stock with each cutout pre-coated to seal) and new head bolt set...did a new valve cover gasket & intake/exhaust gasket at the same time. Top end went together fine (except for the chunk of dirt that I happened to knock into a pushrod bore and land square on top of the seat on the lifter...that sucked) and I had it running w/no accessories saturday night. Gotta love working outside into the dark while it's 90 degrees and humid, but hey, GSD right? Bonus points for getting it running when it was dark enough to see flames coming out of the header.

Few pics:

This made things easier.

Thanks to Bill for the idea of doing the intake & exhaust manifolds with the head off the motor, that certainly helped the process along. Would have sucked without the wrecker though.

Yesterday I got the accessories mounted back up and drove it around very little (still no water or radiator), powerwashed the entire truck for a second time (still a shit-ton of dirt & mud everywhere), and went over all the driveline stuff. I started swapping out the clutch master for the older model w/flared hardline and quickly realized it wanted no part of being on my truck. The bolt pattern is the same but it uses two through-bolts while the '94 has two studs that face opposite ways...the clutch hardline is nice but doesn't fit behind the dual-diaphragm booster (this master was never used in an application other than the single-diaphragm), so I used numerous firewall adjustment tools to make that work. Then the bore on the pushrod is larger because it uses a plastic bushing between the pedal & bore (which of course I don't have and need to source somewhere).

Gonna button that up today and hookup/bleed the new line, also gotta install a new exhaust collector gasket and put the whole front header panel/radiator/radiator support/fans/etc back together and get some water in there.

Clock is ticking...saturday's race day. :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Chris, do I want something like this?

I have no idea what to look for in a helmet.

http://www.bobskidoo.com/Can-Am-CAN...037&browse=260057&shopBy=15235&catalogId=2298

This place is like 5 minutes down the road from me.
The big question: Does it need to be SNELL approved or just DOT? Either way, you should get something with a fiberglass or composite shell, not an injection molded. You want it snug, but not tight. There should be no wiggle room but at the same time not so tight that it causes pain. I would go to a motorcycle store and try on a bunch of helmets and see what fits before ordering anything. Different brands have different shapes that fits everyone differently. How long will you be wearing it? I've had my motorcycle helmet on for over 9 hours a day without a single sign of discomfort. If you will only have it on for an hour or 2 at a time, this will be much less of an issue.

That said, I just ordered a helmet for passengers that I may take for $66 on motorcyclegear.com. For how rarely it will get used I didn't deem it necessary to spend the $400 that I did on my helmet. It arrived last Thursday and seems to be good.

I dunno, do you? :rof:

Mine is like this:

http://www.bobskidoo.com/AFX-FX-17-HELMET-detail.htm?productId=8034207&ez=Helmets~q=fidaa104zz~r=~

A lot of people run the style that you posted, I've personally never tried one. Aside from the shitshow that was the first Rausch race I haven't really had a reason to try anything different...and at that race, nobody's shit worked at all no matter what they had. Just try on a bunch of stuff and find one that fits well and comfortably.

 I plan on just going there and trying stuff out, probably Wednesday night since they're apparently closed on Mondays.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

You can get MX style helmets that are both SNELL and DOT approved as well. Some even come with a tilting shield built in so you don't need goggles. The nice thing about those is that they have a visor.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Well, last time I attempted this race, I made it a whopping mile and a half before the t-case broke and I did this:

Let's hope I stay in it long enough this time for the beer to at least get cold. :|

 I hope I don't drive down only to experience 5 minutes of racing.

Anthony they don't mention anything about needing to be SNELL approved.

That earns you a full carton of Hi C's.

Ok. Basically, that saves you $. SNELL is a classification that a helmet has to meet to be approved for use on a race track. They revisit the requirements every 5 years, which is also about when helmets should be replaced due to the styrofoam degrading over time.

Your head is so much less likely to hit something when strapped into a caged jeep than it is while riding a motorcycle, so that makes sense.

How big is your noggin? You could try on the size M of this that I now own.

edit: just saw your last post. the helmet I linked to is out.

A. I know what SNELL is.

B. No necessarily. I would disagree if Chris still had his interior cage. I'm not short.

C. I'm not setting myself up for anything yet. I'm just going to go there and try on cheap stuff that fits.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

They've never checked mine, and honestly I don't even know what ratings mine has.

That's not an uncommon rating though. Shouldn't be a big deal to find one that meets that.

your jeep is weak

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

they never checked my helmet. snell 95 is old as hell, i wouldnt feel safe in anything less than snell 2005. you wont have an issue colin, the interior cage from the b-pillars forward is gone, you might smack your head on the back right a bit though (read: not enough to feel, but my helmet shows it)

A. See quote
I have no idea what to look for in a helmet.

B. Eh, I guess you have a point but I can't say that I fully agree. Almost every time a motorcycle crash happens at speed the rider's head hits.

C. That's smart.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Shoulda seen the other guy.

Er, tree. That I knocked over to a 45-degree angle, and ended up with the front end of the truck 6 feet off the ground.

I've had better days.

Thanks, that's the info I was looking for. I'll ask the guy there what he recommends too.

I just don't want to be dropping $200+ on a helmet. I was hoping for somewhere around $100.
