THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

as of 11pm tomorrow, actually tonight, I will have worked 24 hours in 32 hours. Fu(k yea OT :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Mornin' NAC.

I wish I got OT, I would put tons of hours. And I gotta get to the bike shop this wkend to buy a tank bag. I went to put my laptop/work stuff in a [admittedly small] backpack and it didn't fit so I took the car to work today so I could bring my gym stuff. At this rate I only have 1 day per week that I can ride to work. Unacceptable. Time to spend more $$.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Cam bearings look like crap, ugh I wonder if I should still go through with this. At this point I should get new heads and rebuild it or just try throwing the cam in and hoping for the best.

I'd rebuild it or get a running engine from somewhere. You're just going to end up wiping that cam if the bearing surfaces are junk. You have new lifters though right?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

i like soco

and haven brothers

and i like picking up the metal for my tire carrier today
and its gonna be hinged very differently from the norm (swing out and down)

and i is excited to start melting metal to metal

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I wanna see how you do your carrier. I'm planning on a swing out and down also and love to see how people do them. Mainly I need hinge ideas.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'd take the 97 > 98.

12V > 24V

Good to know. I remember reading that somewhere that the early 12V are better than the early 24V (though i did read that sometime in the 2000s the 24V got better and they fixed all the problems or whatever. I don't remember details though.

Edit: I just found a '98 with the 12V listing stating that 98 was the last year for the 12V. Did they swap to the 24V in 1998.5?

[deleted due to advice provided below :)]

Edit: And are the autos really all that bad?

I can't believe I am asking that question. I feel like I should be shot right now.

Scott I drive by that truck atleast 4 times a week and it's a peice of junk. The only reason it comes with the trailer is because the trailer is so rusty and rotted it wont come off the truck. I'd scratch that one out.

Nope, but there's a couple issues with the 24V:

- VP44 Injection pump: Fragile. You get a 24V truck, you put a fuel pressure gauge on it immediately (though I haven't done this yet ). If your lift pump begins to fail, the VP44 will fail soon after due to having to literally siphon the fuel out of the tank. The fuel keeps the VP44 lubricated. You won't notice a bad lift pump until it's too late, but you can tell early by looking at the fuel pressure.

- "53" block: Rumored to be fragile. Look for a "53" casting on the driver's side of the block near the oilpan, directly under the VP44. More information can be found here.

- Runs cold: Not necessarily an "issue" but can be in the winter. My truck never got above about ~160 in the winter, so the heat wasn't that great in the cab. In the summer however, my truck only gets above 190 (operating temp) when I'm towing my XJ on the trailer (~6-7k), uphill, in 3rd gear, doing about 2000-2500 rpms. Again, not so much an issue unless you live in really cold climates where it doesn't get above 50* year round.

Yes 98.5 was the first year for the 24V. Check the above link on the "53" blocks...some late '97 12Vs have it though no reported issues.

YES. The 1st and 2nd gen autos are not that great. I believe the 3rd and 4th gen autos are better, but as soon as you add power to start towing a lot they aren't all that great. I know Travis's friend Scott had issues with his.

Basically, to play it safe, get an NV4500 (5-spd) or NV5600 (6-spd). Either one are practically indestructible. People are only starting to lose gears under ridiculous loads (which I'm more inclined to believe derives from a crappy rebuild).

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Alright, cool. Lately I have really been wanting to get back into a truck/SUV and I am thinking I may be shopping in the 10k-15k range (tops), at which point I should be able to keep my monthly bills the same as they are now or even reduce them depending what I can get for a trade in value on my car (or how much I can sell the car for private party if I don't like the trade in offer).

And regarding running cold: do you run one of those winter padded grill cover/insert things?

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Hmmm, tempting, I dont think it's worth much more than that but according to KBB it is. :dunno: go figure :laugh3:

But if you find me a nice 03+ CTD (don't ask how I came up with that year) for $3300 you have yourself a deal.

im using my jcr 1/4 guards for one of the hinge points, bumper as the lower point, and 7/8 heims.

i dont like the idea of having a ton of leverage on the bumper when using a heavy wheel/tire combo. especially when i like to go fast over jumps and whatnot.

Rebuild?- No thanks
Another engine?- Later
Wipe out the cam?- YES PLEASE!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

see that Mark? found another person who likes soco and lime :D

What, does Mark not like soco? I haven't had soco in like 2 weeks. I think that's gotta be a new record or something (at least in the last year or 2).

this has Ross written all over it.

haha not for nothing, but the PO of Scott's truck had over a thousand ft-lbs of torque via a big turbo, exhaust, computer BS, etc, and that guy beat the bag out of the truck. Now it's got the stock turbo I believe, or maybe slightly larger, intake, exhaust, and a 100hp chip or whatever. Every once in awhile he's not nice to it either, plus it's a work truck for him. I was shocked the stock AT lasted as long as it did. Now it's pretty well built and has been holding up alright for the last year or so, but he put almost 4 grand into it IIRC to get it that way. NV4500/5600 ftmfw
