THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I haven't needed heat for removing any bolts.

believe it or not, with all my rust, the only 3 bolts i broke taking all the stock stuff off were 3 rear upper shock bolts. everything else came out ok. the front leaf bolts and shackle bolts were indeed a pain, but they came out eventually.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Same here. I used PB-blaster for two weeks prior but when I got the bolts out the threads were entirely dry, it didn't penetrate like it claimed it would. Even on my rust bucket they came out without breaking though they were a royal pain in the ass. So far, the only bolts I've REALLY had trouble with were those fricken upper rear shock bolts and the UCA bolts (the ones with those damn tag heads that only work till it's partially loose and still binding, at which point they spin infuriatingly)

EDIT: I'm not sure whether it was because it was AeroKroil instead of PB-Blaster, but when I did the O2 sensor on my MJ I could barely turn the thing till I put some on it. I think it's more the fact that I had already "broken the seal" and gotten it moving, so the penetrating lube had somewhere to go.

3 lines Ken...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, I gotta jump on the 'my rig came apart ok without heat' wagon. I got lucky and only snapped one shock bolt and had some trouble with the leaf bolts but IIRC we ended up not using heat simply because I didn't have it available at the time. Might have made life easier though, so I can't say that I would advise against heat... just that it's not 100% necessary.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

scott, buy those arms. do it. you won't.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I have heat and 1/2" impact gun. I've already done three lifts before so I'm not worried about it. It's more of just company to have around showing this kid what I probably don't know.

I will if I can get them for $500 with shipping :eyes: maybe $550 with shipping... I would kindof rather just build my own but if I could pick up a LA setup then I would just run that for now until I actually upgrade my front axle.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Woooo!!! Just got some potentially good news at work, aka I just found out that tons of pressure has been lifted off me to get the OK to move product out the door before EoQ

Edit: Anyone have experience with Rustys offroad long arm kit? Should I just steer clear of it like my guy kindof tells me to or is it OK?

scott, i would really only buy RK or build my own. RK is good if you don't have access to fab, but you can build your own a bit cheaper than RK sells theirs and have it perform better. my 3 link all said and done will run me about $550. i spent $415 at BF (granted, i got about $50 worth of stuff for other uses) and about $100-$150 in tubing. RK has a bushing on one end, not hard joints all around. I could have done that, but i figured go big or GTFO.

i wouldnt buy rk new, never been thrilled by the quality of there joints, and scott dont ever buy anything from rustys, his parts simply suck if you actually wheel your rig

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I haven't needed heat for removing any bolts. The one bolt that I can remember actually breaking that has been a pain to work with was one of my crossmember bolts.

Ask Ross and Adam. Ross brought his torch when he came down the other weekend, and the heat did not get it out. The bolt only broke further.
Come on Mark, you should know this... :moon: As soon as you've been able to break a bolt you've most likely already put stress risers and fractures in it. The remaining portion will be nowhere near as strong.

Same here. I used PB-blaster for two weeks prior but when I got the bolts out the threads were entirely dry, it didn't penetrate like it claimed it would.
Heat + PB works wonders in those situations.

Mine did too. *knock on wood* Heat is still easier.
so I can't say that I would advise against heat...
I can, depending on the mating materials.

You'll be fine. :)

Spoken from a man with knowledge. Trust him.

Alright, Thanks. I would love to build my own right now... maybe I will just deal with my rear end riding a big higher than my front for a while and build a 3-link rather than spending $$ on a kit and swapping it out later on down the line.

Exactly what I was thinking and what my gut told me. I just wanted to double check since I found a Rustys LA kit on CL that I might be able to pick up cheap and figured maybe it would be able to hold me over until I built a 3 link of my own. I will continue to follow my gut and ignore said CL post like I have been doing for a couple weeks now.

I think I could have figured that out and I gave the people in this thread enough credit that they could figure that out as well. :) There are usually exceptions.

just start saving pennies and everything will start falling into place

Or out of place when that saving isn't enough.
I love building mine, I just want the spending to end.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I have been saving pennies (and nickles, dimes, and quarters). Up to probably about $150 now. Rough guess but the last time I counted I was at $110 or so and that was many months ago.

Maybe I will start bringing coffee from home to work daily... or bring my old coffee machine to work and make it there. Would save me like $3 per day. I wish the coffee that work provides didn't make me sick, that made life super cheap/easy until I realized why I was feeling like crap every day.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Colin's answer to everything.

While I will say that would be nice to have, it is not a necessity.

(And now is where Colin comes in saying all the bolts he has been able to get off with the torches, and how he wouldn't have been able to have done so before hand)

I can't wait to watch you try to take out the leaf spring bolts on your briarwood without heat.

I'm going to laugh my *** off.

Never said heat solves everything either. But 99% of the time, I get EVERY bolt out if I START with heat before it breaks.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

do you realize that you just said "all of the time it works most of the time?"

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Made sense in my head at the time :dunno:

99% of the time I have to use it on a specific project, I get every bolt out during the duration of that project. So like 99/100 projects that I've used heat on I get every bolt out.

Make more sense...?
