the LED tail light thread

Speaking of IPCW... they finally replied back to my last inquiry (earlier today).
In a nutshell, they still can't decide if they want to make LED tails for us.

I think that is a dumb move. From a business standpoint, there are so many XJs out there, they will sell tons of them. Just go on eBay and look how many LED tails are out there for other cars. Hell, my old GTO had some available and they only made 40,000 of them in 3 years.

hah tell me about it. They made approximately 913,000 second gen XJs; you'd think one of the companies I contacted would catch on to that fact.

Anyways, I just lost an auction on a set of tails today, so I have to try again. Obviously, we don't an LED tail light project without any tail lights. It would be allot easier if someone else would help me score some intact spares, but what's a guy to do :dunno:

How much did you loose the auction for?

All the links/ email addresses are on the first page of this thread, but at this point I really don't care if any of those manufacturers make a cherokee tail light or not. I bought some spare tails today, and I'm doing my own thing; hopefully we can do a small batch for some of the guys here that are interested.

I wasted too much energy begging these guys to make something for us. If they want to be stupid about it than they can kiss-off.

It doesn't matter. I managed to win another auction for a set of tails this morning (with the pigtails). It cost me 38bucks shipped.
I'll keep everyone posted of the progress. Thanks anways.

Ok nevermind, I came across a set of the tails at the junkyard and thats why I was wondering.

Though I dont think I could have beat the price you got yours at.

I just realized something.

Will this be a core deposit sort of thing, or mail in the ones you have on your Jeep and wait for them to be shipped back, or install it yourself sort of thing?

Reason Im asking is most people have these on their DD, and I know I cant run around for a month without having tail lights. I also usually dont have the ability to install a lot of electrical stuff by myself (other then plug and unplug, and basic stuff like that).

Yan, tell the guy there is a very large nitch market here, and he needs to get on board for us!

I'm going to try my best to make this thing happen, and I completely understand most guys can't surrender their tails for a lengthy retro because their truck is as also their DD. That's why I'm still thinking this guy should run-off a batch of custom fit LED boards (with 3157 plugs), so that anyone who wants LEDs can do the actual retro themselves (over an evening). That would also keep costs down.

Like I said before, I'll have a better idea what's happening when the guy gets the tails. It shouldn't be long now... I bought a spare set yesterday, and they were shipped to him this morning.

Would the final product be in stock housings? I personally want a more clear look, rather than the diffusing "lenses" on stock ones.

I can tell you that this guy wanted intact tails for two reasons:
1) he needs to get the right specs for the LED boards
2) he wants to make molds of the lenses in case we decide to go down the custom lens route.

I think MOST guys will just want to retain their stock housings/lenses because of lower costs/ quicker
turn-around. I also think some guys might want to choose a different finish. Personally, If I had my way,
I would keep the stock texture, ditch the amber plastic portion in favor of red, and go with a Mercedes
tint finish like this:

My parts Jeep has a set of 1989 taillights that I can donate for the 96- group. Let me know when the time comes and I can throw them in a flat rate box.

I plan on making my own one off custom sets for my 90 and my 89 MJ with some 10mm/5mm reds, 5mm yellows, and 5mm whites as backups. I wont be able to start work anytime too soon on these since I am at school and home is where the machinery etc is. When they do get started I will most definitely show them off. I graduate in Dec and start in on the real world so I will have time then.

I cant wait to see some 97+.

OP, PM me if you need my lenses and I can go get them one weekend soon....or one weekend later.

hey urban, is the end product going to be one of your designs? Because i personally like the bottom left design a lot. But using amber Led's instead of red? Man that would look pretty sweet!

Those sketches were quick, and sloppy. I also based them on the idea that a manufacturer could do whatever they want with the shape
of the reflectors. It's clear, now, that it will take forever (if at all) to have one of those manufacturers actually make something for us.
From now on we're building every idea off our stock reflectors. We're also going to focus on scalability to keep costs down. So anyways,
here's what I wiped up. everything's based on the stock reflectors.

gotcha. well it still looks better than stock! And im sure they will be a lot brighter as well.
