the LED tail light thread

Once you get the hand of it, it's really easy. If you are brand new to electricity, and more importantly soldering, it can be difficult and frustrating, but not impossible. I taught myself completely, and have only been doing it for a couple months now. Those boards (25 led's per) took about 15 minutes a piece to completely put together.

But how difficult is it to wire these into the factory wiring harness? Or would you use relays?

No I'm going to use the factory wiring. Seperating them so that the brake light is up top, parking lights in the middle where the turns would usually go, and turn signals on the bottom where the reverse lights are. The reverse lights are relocated under my bumper. All of this is done by using empty bulb sockets and making connectors out of them that plug into the factoty harness.

update
I just met a guy that's willing make some LED boards for our 97+ tail lights (not the same guy whose taking his sweet time on my front markers). This guy can get a deal at a printed circuit board shop if we do a small batch. and he's willing to do all the legwork so everything fits and plugs properly. He would need a spare set of tails (beat up is fine), and a maybe a tail light harness.

I will get more details, but right I just want to know one thing..... whose interested?

Interested...I was just thinking about this last night, but I'd rather buy something than fab it up since my soldering sucks.

Im interested in a set for pre-97 for my 91 xj.

Interested, but would need a price ballpark...

Interested as well.

I found a set of tails on ebay starting at 15 bucks, and I remember seeing a harness there once for about the same, so worst case scenario - I'll buy them. Having said that, I'm hoping someone can step-up with some spares so I can save a few bucks.

I'll try to get you guys a ball-park figure as soon as possible. I told the guy I'm hoping to get a dozen 97+ guys interested in this retro. Who knows how many we can get if we the get some pre97 guys on board.

I'm willing to supply the pre97 tails for a good price on a set.

Also willing to coordinate the pre97 purchasing so you can concentrate on the 97+ urban yan.

My tails have been shaded with VHT if anyone would like to see what they look like...
They look ok in my opinion, i think i did them a little too dark and left some drip marks in a few places.
reply if you want pics, im not going to take the time if no one wants to see them.

I am interested as well, assuming the price isnt rediculous.

I wish I had a set of spares for my Jeep. I would just take them off, but the whole being a DD thing kind of screws that up.

hey urban im a wee bit confused. Would we be installing the boards in our tail lights ourselves? or do we send in our tail lights to be converted? Or are we buying brand new converted tails from you?

Well, the guy can get us a deal from the Printed Circuit Board shop, and he's experienced molding ABS plastic and lenses BUT the more work he does the more it's going to cost us. I realize allot of the guys here (that expressed interest) want something cheap, so my goal is to work on something scalable. That might mean some prefabbed boards with 3157 plugs for the DIYer, or that might mean completely retrofitted tails. I'll know more as this project progresses

I did find a cheap set of tail lights on ebay. I'm going to bid on them. I'm still looking for the tail harnesses, so I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out. We'll have a better idea of the costs once those parts reach this guy.

BTW. He wants to focus on the 97+ tails first. If all goes well, he promised to do something for the pre96 guys.

Hmmm,I'd like to see what he comes up with- but I'd have to see what kind of costs we'd be looking at (I'm cheap). Looking at IPCW and such, there's no way I could justify hundreds for tailights.
