the LED tail light thread

what were those tails off of or were they a production run? ive seen a few cherokees in my travels with those and always though they came off some special model xj

Holy hell $150 shipped?! I could just get a pair of crappy ebay ones for half that. All I need are the clear lenses to do a little R&D with. Thanks but no thanks.

Well, like Kittrell said, they cost $220+ shipping new. I know it's high for them, but I don't need $, I don't need the room, and if I can't get that for them I'll just hold onto them and use them on a different Jeep someday...

Kapiche?

PS: I think they looked badas$ on my Jeep, it is the silverstone silver color and they looked pretty good. I can get some pics from somewhere I'm sure of them on my Jeep. I got the black ones because I had a set of the chromes that I got for super cheap from a friend and they looked bleh. I took them off because I wanted a change and was wheeling my Jeep alot harder and didn't want to trash a $230ish set of tails so I bought the box steel ones.

Hey all,

not trying to hijack but I'm wondering where did you get the rear roof spoiler with the LED 3rd brake light? I really like that look and I'd love to have one for my 99!

Cheers!

Oh and I'm looking for a set of euro tails like the kind urban yan has but I can't find a pair exactly like his... :(

I doubt they'll make that version anymore. Your best bet is to hound the following manufacturers to make a set of LED tails for our Jeeps. Of the entire list I posted earlier.... these were the three that replied back (IPCW and Winjet were the most receptive). Our best hope lays with them, so hit them up:

IPCW www.inprocarwear.com
[email protected]

Winjet www.winjetauto.com
[email protected]

ANZO USA www.anzousa.com
[email protected] and [email protected]

Hey thanks! To clarify, I'm actually looking for a non-LED set like the ones you are currently using, urban_yan.

ditto on the upper right design. hope these happen i sure would like a set. redid my scout with a painless kit and upgraded most all my lighting to LEDs. can leave the park lights on all night and still starts in the AM.

I fired off an email to Anzo from my hotmail account, and this is what they told me
Currently we do not have plan for Jeep Cherokee LED style taillight and our factory we putting all of our resource to catch up with 07-09models. Hopefully by the end of the year we will resume making product for older application. Sincerely,AnzoUSA.
... it's basically what they told the rest of you guys BUT they did mention the possibility of resuming older designs once they catch up on the newer stuff. I guess we'll have to harass them near the end of the year. I will, also, contact IPCW in a month or so. Last time we spoke they told me they needed a few months to decide if they'll design a set for us.

I wish I had better news, but I don't. We'll just have to harass these people until they break.

man... i leave my headlights on for 30 minutes and my batteries almost DEAD... i need a new one, when i bought it, it had some small wal-mart battery, like something you'd get out of a honda or something lol. when i upgrade it eventually i'll get a nice big duralast gold with 800cca's

I went for one with 1000CCA.

So I've pretty much given up on retrofitting boards into a stock looking transparent housing and having it all buttoned up like the anzo tails. I have, however, decided to put some boards in my stock tails. If nothing else they are about twice as bright, and turn on a lot faster than the stock incandescents. I'm mounting the boards where the stock bulb goes, so that the light can still be diffused before it leaves the housing. If you put them too close to the textured lense it just looks stupid. I used 3mm red superflux's. 25 of them per board in a 5x5 pattern. I'll snap some pics in a few.

Here are a few pics of the brake light board.

Here is the board just sitting face down on the carpet.

And at about 80 degrees.

Bottom line, these things are MUCH brighter than I thought, which is a good thing. I let the board sit on for about half an hour, and the heat was next to nothing. Warm, but not hot at all.

Nice. Personally, I would space out the leds a bit (so they look like leds when everything's fully assembled). I wouldn't go with a square shape either (it's too generic); I would try building the boards/ positioning the leds to the shape of the tail light reflectors. I think it would have more of an oem feel that way.

BTW. I spoke to IPCW a few weeks ago, but they told me they haven't decided if they'll offer something for our application yet. I will harass them again in a month or so.

I wanted to space them out more, but if I did I would have to a.) put the boards closer to the lense, and b.) make is a funky round shape, which gets kinda tricky with PCB. This way, the beam pattern of the tail lights will be exactly what is was before, but with better response and more lumens. Also, when you take off the housings and have just the bare frame, you realize how TINY those spaces are where the bulbs go. Not much room for a full on retro.

I know there not LED's but if you have a pre-97 you can swap in wagoneer tails...

I really like these for a pre-97 LED swap, but they're so hard to come by...

Yea seems like pre-97's have it all. Cheap euro's, wagoneers, and aftermarket red and clear two tones... Here are some pics of how I built the boards (yes I'm a pic whore :))

Solder

Add some resistors

And throw on some quick disconnects

And cover it all up with some RTV

Once you get the hand of it, it's really easy. If you are brand new to electricity, and more importantly soldering, it can be difficult and frustrating, but not impossible. I taught myself completely, and have only been doing it for a couple months now. Those boards (25 led's per) took about 15 minutes a piece to completely put together.
