NICE mounts!!!!

quick question, what weight oil are you running in your front dif? Just ordered an aussie locker and solid diff cover. So im gonna upgrade everything at once.

Good plan. IH Only - North added SAE 75W in the front diff when they installed the gears and locker. I suggest going with some Royal Purple if you can afford it. I'm planning to swap front gear oil soon and will go with that.

I'm finally getting around to posting some pics of the Hi Lander's Poker Run on the Rubicon-Wentworth Springs Trail over Father's Day weekend. Our club likes to get an early start to avoid getting stuck behind a line of broken rigs on the trail.

[Part I]

Here is a view of Loon Lake at 5:30 am on the way to the trail.

DSCN4115.jpg

As you can see, there was plenty of snow in the high country, even for mid June. We only saw a few snow drifts left on the trail, however.

DSCN4117.jpg

Arriving on the trail head early provided a few of us Boonie Bouncers the opportunity to air down and gulp mugs of hot coffee.

DSCN4121.jpg

I drove the trail alone on this trip. 100K XJ, to my left, drove his Green Machine on the Rubi for the first time.

DSCN4434.jpg

Randy provided expert co-piloting skills. Not bad for a Samurai driver. (Kidding, of course...)

DSCN4435.jpg

The fun begins quickly, with the line-up for the gate keeper.

DSCN4448.jpg

We had a brief delay at the gate keeper, as our trail leader had to be strapped and pulled free from the boulders.

DSCN4450.jpg

More fun with rocks...This pic was taken just after the gate keeper, as we approached alligator alley.

DSCN4452.jpg

The last climb before the granite slab.

DSCN4130.jpg

The good thing about sponsored runs is the availability of qualified spotters along the way. Many thanks to them, even though they made the trail a little too easy to get all 120+ rigs off the trail in a timely manner.

DSCN4454.jpg

This is a view from the top as we approach the first checkpoint. For those unfamiliar with a Poker Run, you have five (5) checkpoints. You received a sealed envelope with a poker card inside at each checkpoint. The best hand at the end of the day wins cash and prizes.

DSCN4139.jpg

Here is the lineup for the first check point.

I love this big rock.

DSCN4145.jpg

This is my attempt at creative photography. That is James ahead of me in his customized TJ, and 100K XJ behind me in his Green Machine. (My Jeep is better than his.)

DSCN4463.jpg

That's Loon Lake in the background.

DSCN4150.jpg

Having fun on the rocks.

DSCN4152.jpg

Here we are posing on our usual stopping point on the granite slab. I dig this pic. Looking good, Kev!

DSCN4466.jpg

The usual suspects.

DSCN4471.jpg

We took a few happy snaps while we waited for the trail leader to repair his broken tie rod. He was not having a good day.

DSCN4162.jpg

The Rubicon gathers all sorts of drivers and rigs. By far, the coolest place on the planet.

After the leader repaired his tie rod, the trail run started back up as did the fun. I could have taken an easier path, but why?

DSCN4171.jpg

We hooked a left at Wentworth Springs Trail. The Rubicon continues to the right. I'll leave that for another day.

DSCN4172.jpg

This is checkpoint 2. Typically, the checkpoints have a theme, but this year seemed a bit lacking in the creativity department. I'll blame it on the oil leak..or the economy..or the late spring...

DSCN4175.jpg

Solitude.

DSCN4183.jpg

No, I'm not signaling an off-camber left turn. As usual, I'm taking a pic.

DSCN4185.jpg

I love this log.

DSCN4195.jpg

More spotters.

DSCN4475.jpg

Good flex from the Green Machine. Hey...where's your fender flare?

DSCN4479.jpg

Best place on Earth.

DSCN4490.jpg

I love that flex.

Mall Rated!

This is where the snow goes when it gets warm.

DSCN4507.jpg

Broken rigs can be seen everywhere you look. Actually, that's Bob's Jeep with a mundane flat. Kurt is helping out with the air hose.

DSCN4511.jpg

Check Point 3. That's a bit better...at least they had a theme this year. They won 50 bucks for their trouble.

DSCN4517.jpg

This is Gurley Creek. Not too technical, but creek crossing is always fun.

DSCN4522.jpg

DSCN4194.jpg

Tread lightly! Keep the trails open.

DSCN4523.jpg

Second to last check point.

DSCN4526.jpg

...and here we are back at camp. The Green Machine ended up with a busted driveshaft U-joint, but thankfully I carried a spare and Kevin fixed it Sunday morning. No other trail damage worthy of mention.

DSCN4537.jpg

None of us won a poker hand, but the trip was a blast nonetheless. I'm looking forward to Poker Run 2011 (my fourth year).

Did you get the tail light housings? I need to at least get the lower guards, found a large dent under the plastics. and would like to get the uppers as well.

Josh

Not yet. I really did not want to spend any more $$ on this pig until I replaced the header, but I could not resist spending some pocket change on the guards once I saw their sale. I will probably get the tail housings after the header, performance muffler, and rear bumper. Possibly after my 2011 Moab trip.

Seriously, best father son rigs on the forum.

Looks GREAT. I love the frog, and the green machine is what I want mine to look like!

We drove up to Lake Tahoe over the July 4th weekend for a camping trip camping at Zephyr Cove resort. The wife and I left early Friday morning and lugged the 3500 lb Fleetwood Bayside tent trailer, along with a little kid, two dogs, and a crap load of camping equipment (yeah...beer) with the Cherokee. We've towed the same amount with the XJ on previous trips, but this time the Frog had to endure warmer temps and two steep passes.

DSCN4618.jpg

Unfortunately, the amount of camping equipment we hauled was too much for the weary old Jeep and it overheated a few times on Donner Pass, and again on Brockway summit near the lake. Both passes are at the 7200 foot elevation and we cruised along at a stunning 30 mph. Thankfully, traffic was light and we followed plenty of logging trucks at the same speed.

A normal two hour trip took us four, and I lost plenty of transmission fluid as the engine temps reached the red line. Most of it appeared to seep from the RMS and coated the tranny pan on back, hitting the hot exhaust causing impressive clouds of white smoke as we lugged up the hills. I was able to pull over and let the engine cool so it was never driven in the red for more than a few seconds, at most.

Regardless, this made my wife and I make serious plans to continue our beloved camping adventures. We have a few more trips planned this summer, with a trip to Yosemite in early Fall, and Moab next spring. Serious thinking is in order.

For one, I must regain my lost horsepower and fix the cooling issue. Tonight I ordered an APN header to replace my cracked stock exhaust manifold. I will install a Magnaflow cat back system next (or just performance muffler) once I get the header installed. I'm sure my broken engine mount was a prime culprit to the cracked header. Thanks to Brown Dog's mounts that I installed last week, I should not have to worry about that again.

APN-15343.jpg

I am also planning to upgrade my tranny cooler to something with larger capacity. I've seen plenty of write-ups on this forum and I'll need to order something good before the August trips. After that, I'll upgrade to an electric engine fan, which I hear gives phenomenal results.

If none of those upgrades fixes my power and cooling problems, we will look at buying a 2004 Grand Cherokee LTD for the prime tow rig. 100K XJ and I looked at a few vehicles tonight and I think that would be a good decision. I've owned a 2000 WJ before, and I really liked the 4.7L motor for towing. Great vehicle.

It was a good trip to Tahoe, regardless. Cool lake, great fireworks, and crazy people. Happy Birthday, America. Peace.

Didn't get any wheeling shots but maybe someone did. I'll post up if they did. StumpXJ's wife has some on her camera.

Excellent, FlexdXJ, thanks for the pics! The rig is looking great.

Thanks man, I ended up winning a rusty's gift card for $240 so thats buying a SYE and I am getting OME leafs and shocks also. Then I'll be bumping it up another inch or so! I have a set of shackle relocation brackets also. It oughta be floating like a Caddy! Oh and I am getting quarter guards one of these days.
