i dont see any mud on the jeep??? hahah wonder why

LOL. Yeah, I'm avoiding the sticky stuff for now on. Not only is it tough to wash off, it is just plain embarrassing to be stuck in mud up to the axle hole.

By the way, they did a lot of work at PC since you yanked me free a few weeks ago. I doubt I'll be back until Fall when it reopens fully. Should be a rockin place by then.

what areas did they have closed off? from the pictures im assuming the whole eastern end of the park?

The only part that was open for 4X4 traffic was the main area with the frame twister trail, rock gardens, mud pit (stay away!) and fabbed climbing hills. A lot of work has gone into new roads and fences surrounding the main section. Everything else that was open three weeks ago was closed last weekend.

All but the main mud pit (stay away!) was drying up and dust was blowing in the breeze. I prolly won't be back until it cools down again in Fall.

In preparation for my Rubicon-Wentworth trail ride this weekend, I spent some quality time under my Jeep. Here's what I found (in order of repair priority):

Transfer case will not shift into 4-lo. Attempted link adjustment without luck. Could not move shift arm into gear with wrench. Worn chain? Bad shift fork? TC rebuild kit needed?

Discovered a split engine mount bushing on driver's side. This could be a reason the TC will not engage in 4-lo. Brown Dog mounts on the way? I did not check tranny mounts but I will get to that today.

Emergency brake does not hold vehicle weight. Discovered while shifting Jeep into neutral when shifting into 4-lo and slowly slid down the driveway. Brake adjustment required.

Loud engine rattle noticed during idle. Loudest directly under oil pan. I was hoping it was a loose heat shield or something mundane, but this is not the case. Valve adjustment necessary?

Exhaust leak noticed at manifold. New oil noticed on one exhaust bolt from valve cover. New APN header on the way? Valve cover gasket also required.

RMS leak nearly healed after 5 months of RMS repair. Only one small drop of oil present below seal between engine and tranny. Leak could be coming from valve cover. No other oil leaks present.

New lower control arms scratched and beat from last wheeling event. No real damage noted.

Damn. Looks like you've got some work to do.

Both rigs look great!

True that. I was feeling a tad deflated yesterday evening then I got to thinking of how much I enjoy wrenching so it is all good. None of this stuff is all that difficult but I hate to spend the $ on stuff when I have so many other items to buy (bumper, muffler, steering, etc).

The kid's Jeep needs the RMS treatment and that will be a PITA for him. Maybe I'll plan my APN header install or TC rebuild for the same day.

Must get all of this done by next year's Moab trip.

Hmmmm when are you going to Moab???

We are planning an early June trip, but that may change to late May if my wife is still layed off from the school district. We are towing the trailer and will spend about a week there. That's the plan, anyway.

100k XJ is planning to drive his Green Machine also, unless he breaks it by then. Should be a fantastic trip.

In light of my list of repairs posted earlier, I just ordered the K2572-0 engine mount kit with poly bushings from Brown Dog Offroad. No tax or shipping charges, and I got a $25 NAXJA discount.

This will get installed sometime next week.

I got a call from Brown Dog on the way home from work and they asked me if I had an aftermarket header. I told them I was planning to install an APN header, so they swapped out the kit for one that will accommodate that. That's good customer service, right there.

I also spent some more time under my Jeep and discovered that I never installed my transfer case linkage correctly after the SYE install, which was causing me to miss 4-lo. I re-installed the linkage (at the transfer case) and adjusted the trunnion bolt as per specs, and I now have my 4-lo gearing. Yeehaw. I'd be upset at my shoddy mechanical work but I'm so thrilled that I don't need to open the TC again that I don't care about my inept abilities.

This has been a special Frog Blog announcement.

Boy I hope I win a set of these at the Cherokee Crawl raffle! Those things are SWEEEEEEET!

Why did you need to take the linkage off? Did you do a Tera Low 4:1?

Josh

I had to remove the linkage because I am a dumb a** and did not reinstall it correctly after my SYE installation. I wheeled a few times and could not get it into 4-lo. After some careful inspection, I noticed that I did not put the link rod on the TC case correctly. There is an oval part on the TC bolt that fits on the linkage bar, and I failed to seat it. It's good now. Easy, cheesy.

Did he actually say that the APN header required a different bracket, or did he just say he will make sure he sends you one that will work? If/when my header cracks (if it's not already) I plan on switching over to an APN and am hoping I dont have to swap out the super bracket I have on there now. I've been meaning to ask the Brown Dog, but it just hasn't been high on my priority list since I'm not ready to buy a new header yet.

I told them I was planning to swap to an APN header and they said they would send out a bracket that would fit. I'm sorry but I don't have the new part number, but when it arrives in a few days, I'll make sure I post up the details and some pics.

From what I've heard, you'll be happy to run the BD brackets. Can't wait to get them on. I'll have them for Sierra Fest.

All Brown Dog engine brackets are available in two versions: one for OE header; another for aftermarket headers. The version for aftermarket headers is a bit more compact for a bit more exhaust clearance. The aftermarket version takes more time to make or we'd only have one version. When you order online one of the checkout questions asks if you have an aftermarket header. If so, we make the correct version for you. RocknXJ order by phone. I was so excited to hear from another NAXJA member, I forgot to ask about the header. Thus the call back. Thanks, again, for the order, RocknXJ. We appreciate your business.
