Tahoe Work Project

I’m planning a short work day on the Tahoe side for Saturday September 24th. Yes, it this next weekend.

In short it will be a day of moving logs.

The first project is right in the staging area. We need to remark the boundary of the staging area parking lot. There have been instances of people parking on vegetation. There are logs in the area that can be moved in to place with winches and tow straps.

The second project is at Miller Lake. The forest service has agreed to drop a few trees to help block the bypasses in the area. We will need to block the trail while the trees are being dropped and then drag the trees in to place.

The third project is at the large mud hole just west of Bottom Dollar Hole and The Potato Patch. Again we need drag logs in to place to block the bypasses in the area. This spot is about one mile off Barker Pass Road.

The Fourth spot is another mud hole about two miles from Barker Pass Road. This time we need to block the original trail and reroute traffic along on of the bypasses. The original trail goes through a mud bog while the bypass stays on high ground. Again, we will use existing downed logs to block the trail and reroute traffic.

I know it sounds like a lot but we will take on what ever we have the personnel to accomplish. There will only be room for about two vehicles at each area (except for the staging area).

Post up if you can make it.

Saturday the 24th 9am at the Tahoe staging area.

I've got about a half dozen people signed up and it would be nice to have a few more.

It's only a half day project if I can get enough people. Even stopping for an hour on your way in would help.

Let me know.

I'm still on for Saturday.

I have about a dozen people signed up. Stop by if you're in the area.

We had ten people in total attendance.

The staging area was the first project. Four major logs were moved to prevent people from parking over vegetation. Some rock boundaries were rebuilt and trash was picked up in the area.

The group split in to two groups. One group went to an area before the staging area and moved logs both to open up overflow or oversized trailer parking on the north side and to block parking on the south side of the paved road.

The second group went to Miller Lake to meet the TNF employees. The FS had dropped some trees the day before, so those were positioned to block bypasses. When the FS arrived another much larger tree was dropped. No motorcycle, quad or Jeep will try a bypass to the north after that tree was dropped.

A future project for that area is re-establishing a drain at the west end of the area and to build a small dike to prevent water flow in to the water hole. I will approach the Lake Tahoe Hi-Lo’s about completing this before winter.

The whole group got back together and proceeded to the Meadow area. Before we reached the Meadow we stopped and blocked some quad bypasses.

We had lunch and discussed the plan for the Meadow. This area was not on my list for today but was in much need of protective blocking. Three more trees were dropped in the area and positioned along the side of the trail, block vehicle access to the meadow.

The FS left after the Meadow project. Their help was tremendous. Without the trees that they dropped, we could not have done half the work we did. They were also very cooperative when we had questions about how to do things or how much we should be attempting. The FS, both TNF and the Basin, were very thankful and impressed with our efforts.

The group proceeded to the first Mud Hole. It was decided there was nothing to do at three o’clock in the afternoon. With several people throwing out ideas, it was our thought to try and dig a channel to lower the level of the water in the hole. Draining the hole would be too much work but lowering the level of the water by two feet should keep people on the trail.

Although I had a camera, I failed to take pictures. There were a few people taking pictures. I will forward these as soon as I get them.
