T-Stat recommendations

Hi 👋🏻 new member here. I have a 99 2 door manual 4.0 that needs a flush. I’ll be doing the thermostat at the same time. I was wondering if anyone had a part number for a good one I can search online? I asked fb and there was a debate about 180 vs 195 degree versions. Any questions feel free to ask.

195*.

I'd look at a Stant or Super Stant. 195-197 F is what I use. BTW I do have a Carrol in my 2000. I picked up a few off of E-Bay. I've had a Mr. Gasket and a Motor Rad fail on me. Rober Shaw is being made again. I have used the old ones.

Just get a 195. I always use Stant but there are other decent ones as well.

The thermostat only controls the minimum coolant operating temp once everything's up to temp. A new 180 f thermostat only remedies overheating if the old thermostat was bad (stuck partially/fully closed).

I've had good luck with Robert Shaw, even the newer Chinese made ones. I second the advice to stick with 195. Stant I believe is now repackaged MotorRad.

Most important is Stats are only for the control of the motor temp and have nothing to do with the actual coooling system!

One aspect of running a lower temp T-Stat is that oil temps might not get up to temp to burn off water vapor. Possibly not as critical with newer oils. In some area, people take out the thermostat. I'm not sure of the circumstances of this story. I was in a part store in Tulsa. A customer brought in an oil pan. I think for a Chevy Small block. It looked like it was filled with grease. He said the block was filled up too. I always wonder if there was no thermostat in the engine. Also, with Fuel Injection, a lower temp might trigger the ECM to go into 'limp' mode. So, the injectors might put in extra fuel. Some Street racers use this to get a few tenths off their time. Still, after a while the coolant system will reach its capacity. That is dependent of ambient Temps. Some people will block off the radiator to keep temps up. Think winter conditions.

These are the T-Stats I am using in my 2000 XJ :
I had to trim the T-Stat gasket though.

That is correct. And what used to be the Superstat no longer has the brass bleed pin. Gates are also Motorrad.
