searched but still have some ?'s. are there any bolts directly on the tcase holding it, or is it just on the crossmember. if i am thinking right all it does is put a spacer between the 4 bolts on the crossmember and frame rail, is that right? if it is, how the hell do they justify selling them for $30

Can't speak for the price, but effectively you're looking at four longer bolts and usually four aluminum spacers. There are two bolts and two studs that need to be removed; and you can make the whole thing yourself out of scrap steel tubing if you want - I'll repeat an of-heard phrase around here and say See gojeep's site for another inexpensive idea using 1" square steel tubing.

would it be ok if i just used some thick washers?

I think the drawback to the 'thick washers' plan would be the likelihood of slippage. With aluminum spacers or the square tubing, there are fewer parts that could move.
