SYE install help

Managed to get the ring on and both shafts, chain, and spring back in the case. I just noticed that I've got some lint from my shop towels in the case. They're very small fibers, should I be worried about it? If not I'm getting the rear case half ready to put back on.
 
Second question to add to the last...

How does everyone else clean the old RTV off the aluminum housing? I've been picking at it, but there's got to be a better way...

Either use a cleaning wheel on a grinder or use a razor blade.
 
I chose razor blade...It's already on and curing.:D (hopefully I did it right)

I'm actually ready to install the rear output housing. I've got the speedo gear on the main shaft already and just read the instructions for the next step. It calls for me to install the bearing and seal onto the housing, but I think it came installed. Am I missing something else?
 
nope, it's on there alreay, don't forget them little rubber things that look like sprockets! they go on before the yoke's.
 
Is it normal to have about 3/16" of play front to back with the main shaft after it's installed? I haven't put on the yoke's yet.

That happened to me too. I saw them and wiped them out with a rag, but they're probably fine as long as you didn't leave a whole bunch that's going to clog up the oil pump pickup screen. I'm going to drive it a few days, then change the fluid just to be safe because it was freakin gusting 60 mph winds this past weekend when I was working. I used a trash bag to cover the open case when I wasn't working with it, but I just want to be safe do the switch to synthetics.
 
Stupid question, but are you doing this while the case is in your jeep? If so, did you need to mess with the cross member at all, or are you just going after the thing as-is. I am about to start an AA SYE install, but I think I stripped a crossmember bolt when installing my RE LCA Drop bracket braces and I not too interested in trying to get that out if I don't have to.

Also, any recommendations for a newb on this work (other than locating a good pair of spring retainers)?

Don't need to touch the X-member. Work as-is, but maybe jacked up if you need more room to lie underneath. I was so comfortable after putting in my 4.5" lift.

The only tricky parts for me were the lock rings and putting the cover back on while trying to get the oil pump tube aligned. Lock ring pliers that open at least 1.25" and a friend to hole the cover while you you align the tube will make things trivial.

:shhh: hmmmm.I was wondering what those were for.......ummm what's their purpose? as mine have been sitting on my work bench for the year and a half since I installed the A/A SYE. :doh:
 
Just to add to Thayer's response, I'm doing mine with it still in. I've got plenty of room. I do have a 3/4" drop kit on the crossmember, which will be coming out. If it weren't for that, I think I would have had a hard time reaching the nut on the back of the 12 point 10mm bolt to remove it.

My guess on the rubber "sprockets" is that they help to seal the end of the shafts to make sure nothing can work it's way onto the splines, causing rust. That or just acting as a kind of bushing between the yoke and the shaft. I'd like to know what they really are if anyone knows.

I'm in the process of trying to install my rear drive shaft and having problems. I picked up new straps and bolts for the pinion joint, but the straps don't seem to fit. The old straps were tightened flush with the pinion yoke, but the new ones seem to be much flatter and both sides are about 1/8" from touching the pinion yoke. These were the only ones I could find without going to a dealership. Are they the wrong ones? Should I go to the dealership tomorrow and try to get new ones? Since this is the tail end of an SYE install, I can drive with no shaft...:D

Thats the way theyre supposed to be,the old ones are probably stretched.
 
I'm still driving on my front shaft. I need to get my rear shaft shortened, it's a long story, but I should have known that everything that could go wrong will go wrong with me. Anyways, I got new u-joint straps and bolts from Napa for $8. It should be part #260-0443.
 
After a break for some food, I managed to tighten the straps so that they are closer to the yoke. Still not touching, but I don't think they're going anywhere and I'll be checking them anyway...

Now I'm trying to attach the CV end. The new yoke on the back of the Tcase is a few degree's off from lined up. I'm trying to decide if I should try to push the vehicle forward/backward to get it to line up, or if I should lift the rear axle till I can spin it freely. Any suggestions?
 
Ok, both shafts are in and the case is all ready for the Dex III ATF I picked up. The only thing I didn't reinstall that I think was supposed to be is the tab on the back of the 12 point 10mm. The plastic tab that's supposed to clip into it was broken, so it wasn't connected to begin with. I'm hoping it's fine as is and I'm not going to mess with it.

At this point this thread is almost a full write up... Not my initial intention, but if anyone ever runs into this thread in a search, hopefully they won't have any more questions. :laugh3:
