SYE for 242

http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html click on tech info, go to bottom 231/242 conversion.

This the Currie conversion. In photo 23 it show the flanges mating w/grade 8hardware, then a spicer yoke mates to the rear flange (you don't see).

The bolt you see in the center may remind one of an r/e h&t, But I assure you it is inserted into a brand new 231 tailshaft that was not "raped and snapped" to jury-rig an inferior set-up.

I just crawled under my jeep with a disposable camera, by tomorrow pix will be up.

Don't let the flanges (that do give you a DOUBLE row output bearing) and the re style bolt/washer the wrong impression. They are light years apart.

Though my knowledge is limited in many areas, I've been posting here since '97 - circa Beezil (he helped me via the phone put the thing togther one afternoon in '99) - and in at least this thread trust me. peace.

Correction: currie conversion uses flange, designed to use 231 ts in 242 tc w/flange, 231/242 uses an output yoke. My currie type rocks, I'm sure any sye that replaces the tailshaft and housing is golden.

Don't let them talk you out of your 242. I have one too...and plan to do the SYE soon. I think from Tom Woods, the SYE and CV Drive Shaft will run less than $500. I'm running 3.5" lift for 2 years now...getting tired of the vibes, even with a TC lowering kit.

Love the 242...and wheel it hard (although I am easy on the skinny peddle)...just don't need to get into it to wheel properly. Love the option of full-time 4x4 here in Montana for snow.

I use the RE h&t and it works great. Those that complain about leaks are not installing it correct. I'm sure the Tom Woods is a good one to, never seen it or heard about it until after i got the one from RE.

And i like pictures, so here's on of the RE h&t on a NP242.

I've got a spare just in case, so I will be wheeling the 242 for a very long while.

Why is the NP242 so unpopular? I love mine, even though I live in the one part of crawlorado that gets three days of snow a year. But I usually drive in fulltime everyday, athough Ive stopped and went to parttime this last week with all the snow left on the ground. Also I need to replace the ujoints on the front driveshaft I can feel the play when I step on the gas. God I have so much shit to replace on my XJ.

Currie SYE, Tom Woods link show actual install.

After about 115k the double row bearing (some japanese company, very high quality) and national seal is still golden, though just received from Currie replacements simply for preventive maintenance (frequent ny/fl. trips).

I'm not sure about RE h&t, from what I gather one drills and taps hole in output shaft? Not the case w/Currie, see install instructions. Machined flange SOLIDLY retains bearing, half of bearing in tailpiece, half in machined flange.

Love my 242, 31's and fun in the snow, that's all I want and need.

Looks like you have been suffereing a oil leak from it though which is very common in the hack and taps as well.

Krikes, Mate, absolutely not!!! AND this is not a h&t!!!

All that red crap you see there is Mobil 1 grease that flings off the cv joint because I got frickin' tired of cutting up one-inch wide strips of shop rags to clean inside the joint after my anally-scheduled lube routine...

btw, I heard that Fosters is p$@swater, and real Aussie beer is WAY above our feeble alcohol content.

I think that's false advertising, a northern hemisphere issue, not yours

Please verify...

I know yours is not hack and tap and why I was supprised to see the oil mark. Didn't know it was from too much grease. ;)

I actually dont drink beer but I dont know any Australian myself that drinks Fosters as considered too weak a beer. Here in my state it is mainly Victorian Bitter or VB. http://fosters.com.au/enjoy/beer/victoria_bitter.htm
Funny enough it is still owened by the Fosters Group but it is well know here that we export the stuff we dont like and keep the good stuff to ourselves! ;)
