Sway Bar Sizing

Ok, SOMEONE'S got to have an authoratative list of which years/models of XJs had which size sway bars.

Anyone?

(and are all the 97+ XJs using the same size?)

Just go measure it and be done with it.

Thanks for the help!! You're truely an asset to this board.

I think there may have been different sizes for the same year depending on other features, measuring it cant hurt, especially with calipers. Are you looking to replace the bushings or to upgrade to an addco bar or something?

I could have told you to search, but I didn't. There is no set in stone method of determing what size is on what.....other than measuring. IF you would have searched, you would have found that on your own.

Thanks for the compliment. I think you're an ass.

When I had my 85 XJ, adding urathane end link bushings to the front sway bar made a HUGE difference so I was planning on getting a set of front and rear urathane bushings for my 00 XJ.

It's been awhile, but I believe the front swaybars came in 26, 27, 28, and 30 mm thicknesses. I know the early limiteds had the 30 mm frontbar, since I have one.

Too small poly bushings make a difference if you can stand the ride. Correct sized poly bushings probably help, but they aren't as dramatic.

I don't think any one makes poly bushings for the rear swaybar.

You really do need to go out and measure the bar. :) Jeep has always had the tendency to throw on whatever part was handy regardless of build sheet.

Really? I thought 1" (~26mm) was the largest they used.

i was told 28 was the largest bar, found on some limiteds, early (pre 87) waggys, and all up country packages. also the police size was 28

I have been looking for the same information for a couple of years on this forum and not found a difinitive criteria. My 92 has the large one, it is a limited, but I have seen other limiteds that do. My 90 Laredo had the smaller one which I traded for a large one. Big difference.

28 is the max, there is no 30mm sway bar, except addco's.

rear came in none, 16mm or 22mm, tho ive never seen proof of a 22mm

Addco's are 28mm for the front and 22mm for the rear.

Yep, upon reading this again, I agree, 28 mm is the largest factory bar. There were 3 smaller sizes of that I'm sure. Like I said, it's been over seven years since I replaced my front swaybar with one from a limited.

As far as the asset to the board remark, I've been trying to help people on this board for the last 8 years. I'm not the most expert around, but I have managed to find a caliper and apply it to a few swaybars. :moon:

I think they sold out, but summit had a 50% off sale on xj sway bars front and rear...i believe the fronts were 1 1/8 and the rears were 7/8. The sale is only for the gold plated ones, but i think some people who tried to buy them were told they were no longer available. Cant argue with buy one get one free, even if they are gold

That wasn't a poke at you Fred. That was a poke at Wolf. I basically said what you did (go measure) and Wolf made a remark that I was an assest to the board. So, when you said go measure.......I did the same "asset to the board" remark. Read through the posts, you'll see what I mean.
