Swapping HP d30 for c200f?

I was curious if anyone could explain what the difference between the LOW pinon dana 30 and a C200F is. I believe basically dana sold the parts and chrysler assembled them under the name C200F. Is this correct? So is a lp d30 and a c200f the same axle? Im curious because I need to regear my HP dana 30 to match the 8.8 with 3.73's I just installed in my 88 XJ. I have found multiple grand cherokees at a junk yard here with 3.73's, which I can pick up for $100 for the assembly. Am I looking at any problems, swapping my XJ axle for a ZJ. ( Drive shaft length appears to be good on mine.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

c200f is new on me too. Just looking around it seems that they came in late late model WKs and others.

I'm not sure of the differences. The look extremely different.

You can't find a stock HP30 in a yard there? There's 50 of them in my yard for 75 bucks.

Interesting. Basically I want to stuff a ZJ grand cherokee axle under my XJ. Does anyone know if it will work, or have any experience with it. This is what I do know.

The XJ up to I believe 99 uses a high pinon dana 30. This does have reverse cut gears, and normally they have 3.07 ( standard trans xjs) 3.55 ( auto ) 4.10's for the 4 cycl. XJ's. A few XJ's equipped with a tow package came with 3.73's.

The grand cherokee, uses a low pinon what i believe to be dana 30. However most seem to come with 3.73's. Looking up the specs it appears that they referred to as the c200f or something else. Not real sure of the name change or why. I do know they have a different front drive shaft, and several seem to use cv joints on the axle shafts rather than U-joints.

So in my current state, I can pick up a ZJ axle for $100, or spend about $600 regearing my XJ axle, only to redo it in a few months. Any advice or info would be greatly appericated. Thanks again.

I wouldn't swap a LP in place of a HP!

i spent $300 rebuilding my axle (seals, BJs, TREs, bushings, brakes) AFTER buying it.

i fail to see the appeal of putting a LP axle in your cherokee, and i surely wouldnt spend the money to rebuild it to my standards, i tend to be a little anal. if your set on a LP30, the TJs came with them in the 3.73 flavor, and all of your parts will bolt in. i cant say the same for the ZJ models.

i fail to see why your set of 3.73s as well. but personally... id pull a good housing, and have gears installed with it out of the cherokee. most places will charge less to gear axle that arent under the jeep. and then you can rebuild it at your leisure until your ready to swap it into the front. another bright side... is if you opt to install a locker, you are on the right side of the carrier break, so you can use the locker with lower (numerically higher) gears.

I currently have 2 Hp dana 30's. one geared 3.07 and one geared 3.55. My jeep is not street legal and is trailered everywhere as a toy. And since its just a toy, its rarely used in 2wd. I just installed the 8.8 which has 3.73's and a locker. (which is the only reason i want 3.73's) I will be going to 4.88's in a few months, So I would rather not spend the cash on regearing to 3.73's up front just to wheel for a few months. Lets just say my wifes not thrilled with the amount of money im spending on a toy. I know the Hp dana 30 is much stronger and Ill be building one when i regear. However currently my toys sitting, and im looking for something to stick under it to go play. A $100 axle is doable. If the ZJ axle fits, i really dont care that the ring and pinon are weaker, or the drive shaft is lower. Ill be snapping the stock axles most likely before i brake the ring and pinon.

As far as the TJ axle goes, i believe those are leaf spring axles arent they. Also i dont have any cheap stock tj axles i can find.

FYI ALL TJ, XJ, and ZJ grand front axles are 100% interchangeable.

The only difference between an XJ and a ZJ axle is the u-joints. The XJ has them, the ZJ has CVs if it is AWD, like my 93 ZJ. For that matter, I believe that the XJs that came with the 242 have CVs as well.

Someone will chime in if I am wrong about the XJ CVs...

I don't think it had to do with an NP242 or not, I think it was only some of the earlier years that had CVs.

Not too sure as I've never dealt with them. But every rig that had a 242 stock that I've dealt with has had u-joints.

^^^truth. interchangeable, but not identical, as noted throughout this thread

the biggest difference between a XJ D30 (up to mid2000) is the high pinion/reverse cut compared to the ZJ (&TJ) low pinion

So it's trailored everywhere.....why do you need to regear the front to 3.73 then? Just drive it around on the rear 3.73 and regear them both to 4.88's when you're ready.
