Swapping Axles on 8/7, a retrospective

We spent the day at Tim's Fun Factory today wrenching on Jeeps. A little recap.

Here is Columbus (aka srmitchell) pulling out the Aussie locker in his C8.25. He was upgrading to an 8.25 with 4.56 gears.

Ed - pulling apart the front end of Columbus' XJ to install a D30 with 4.56 gears.

Next up is Tim (knucklehead_61) welding up some bumpstops for Columbus.

Mr. Ed again - this time pretending to do work.

Tim's fine welding skills on showcase - putting the side bars on Columbus' existing sliders. That Krylon hammered finish (or whatever the paint was), sure is tough to damage. Tim had to use the grinder for 5 minutes to get it off just a couple of spots.

we just finished up, got ed's rig all done & most of sean's back together. i need to fab up some stronger bumper mounts tomorrow.

How'd it go with removing the D30 carrier to get the seals back in? Lemme know if you need help tomorrow - I can probably stop by for a few hours if needed.

we got to use the custom housing spreader again! :sunshine:

we will be back in action at 9:00 (if columbus gets his butt out of bed on time) and still have lots to do, so pop on over if you get a chance, we can always use the comic relief!

The d30 wasnt too bad. Tims awesome case spreader helped a TON.

BTW- Mr. Josh... the carrier bolts are 45 ft/pounds not 75!

Thanks for all the help Tim, Rob Sean and Josh. Tim's fab skills are top notch and I am very pleased with my fresh D30. Now to get my new 33" KM2's mounted and hit the Rubicon before the end of the season!

Cleaned up rear axle.

It got an aussie, zj disks, and a ruff stuff cover.

Working on the rear.

We welded longer supports to the hitch, then welded 2 tabs to the bumper, and 1 to the hitch. These tabs allow the 2 units to bolt together, mating the bumper to the beef hitch. It works GREAT!

Tabs with pilot holes that were then drilled out.

But what welder did you use? 110? 220? Miller? Lincolin? Hofart? Ready Welder? 25/75? Fluxcore? Stick?

We used an optima with some battery cables and a stick of some kind.

He said he didnt want to waste wire feed on my jeep. IDK

i used my 220v 225amp century mig with .035 wire & stargon shielding gas.
i enjoy welding & fabrication at my fun factory at home. :eeks1:
