Subwoofer upgrade: 15" infinate baffle

About a year ago I put in a sub inspired by the "big bass little space" family of threads. I've alway been a fan large subwoofers: there's no replacement for displacement. The budget was tight as I was still in school, so I got a 12" boss blade extreme for something like $50 from amazon and a pioneer amp off craigslist. It was very loud but sounded bad.

About this time I had started reading up on infinate baffle subwoofers, which provide high quality and good response to very low frequencies, abit at lower efficiency. Sounded good to me, so I got out the sawzall and cut a hole in the inner fender below the floor to turn the sealed box into an IB setup.

It sounded great. Not as loud but much more musical. But I wanted more volume so I decided to upgrade. Fi car audio just came out with a couple of drivers built just for IB: a 15" and an 18. I went with the 15. Both are an excelent value, the 15" was only $120 shipped. It displaces about 3.5liters, which is about 5 times as the 12" boss. It's a much better driver.

It took some clearancing to make the big driver fit. It's deaper so I spaced it out with 1.5" MDF. The wheel well was in the was just a little bit so I made room with a hand sledge. It's a tight fit but I got it in. This was my first time sticking carpet down, and it ain't perfect but it's a lot better than nothing.

Here's a shot w/ my helper:

And the whole back of the jeep:

I had the amp under the rear seat before but it got hot so I stuck it on the back of the seat. Should be easy enough to hide when necessary.

It sounds great. I haven't cranked it all the way yet as I want to let the glue and foam fully cure first, but it is louder and sounds better. Looks better too.

I've ordered a grill to protect the speaker. And I'm going to upgrade the speaker power wire. When I first put it in I just used small wire that I had laying around but the amp would clip more easily that I expected and I think low voltage had something to do with it.

i never thought you could fit a 15 in that space, haha. good job! what are you using to enclose the back side? just that inner 1/4 panel opening behind the plastic trim? if its not sealed be careful, your woofer is going to over-extend and burn the voice coil if you push too much power to it... not to mention you will get all kinds of harmonic vibes from the thin outer skin.

looking good, nice use of space

W/ infinate baffle the back side isn't enclosed. There is no box, there's just a wall that seperates the front and rear wave. In this case it's the jeep, so you could say that the jeep itself is the box.

A box can add efficiency(volume/power or volume/driver), but it will also act as a high-pass filter. It will also add noise. IB is very smooth and clean sounding, no air bouncing around imparting unwanted noise. The only thing that keeps the cone centered is the driver's suspension. The voice coils don't get worked as hard with an IB setup, it's the suspension that's the limiting factor, so the drivers need a lot of travel.

The corner panel doesn't flex much, but on some low notes the roof looks like its moving 1/2 an inch :rof: . And I love how it sounds. It's a much more mature sound than the typical car sub. But if I want the in-your-face bumping I can turn on the bass boost on the amp. I don't see myself doing that much, other than to prove a point.

Srimes,

Wow... definitely need to change my name to Fi Car Audio, lol. Still signed up here from when I used to own RE Audio.

Glad you liked the sub. Please keep me posted when it breaks in and how it sounds long term.

While I dont have an XJ anymore, I still hit the dirt/rocks every other day in my ZJ. Heading to Cedar City tomorrow for the W.E.Rock crawling competition there. Fi sponsors the Johnson 4X4 crawler.

Thanks,
Scott

The driver seems to have broken in. Sounds like it isn't working as hard as before, not that it was working hard. I upgraded the amp power wires: red and black are the old 12 and 10 gauge (I know I know, way too small), blue and clear are the walmart special 5 and 9 gauge. I was planning to buy 4 gauge welding cable, but at 2.70 a foot vs. 32 bucks for the whole walmart kit I went with the kit.

The amp was definately starved for power before and souds better at high volume now. Before the sub would distort before the mains and now the mains distort first.

This sub rocks! :guitar:
It's more than I need and I like it that way, and I did it without losing hardly any storage space.

Oh yeah, I got a speaker grill for it but I think the surround may bump it at full excursion. I don't know that it does but I can press my finger in the holes only an 1/8 inch and feel the driver, so I'll space it out just to be safe.

Nice, Im getting a FI 12" Q soon and im mounting it in the same place. Looks good man!

Thanks. Let us know how it goes. Sealed, I'm guessing?

I spaced out the grill. Found 2 black rubber bungee cords, cut off the ends, and superglued them to the grill. Looks like it belongs there and there shouldn't be any contact now. You can see it as the ridge between the thick black ring of the speaker and the thin black ring of the grill. I should be able to just toss whatever back there and not have to worry.

That long flat roof sure will flex on the right low notes. I put a half-full mason jar up there and it was bouncing around and splashing. Not quite enough to knock it over, but cool anyway.

Ya im going sealed, if it was ported paintballs would end up in it all the time:nono: Pretty soon I will start ordering the sub/amp/wire/ etc. Anybody know if I could fit a fosgate power1000 on the left side since I have no donut in there anymore?
