Ok so I have a few upgrades on my 99 xj running a 6.5 in lift w/ 33's and just recently bought a c8.25 rear with 4.56 gears and powertrax no-slip locker. I want to take out my current stock c8.25 and throw the new upgraded setup on. the only thing is i'll have to reagear my dana 30 to 4.56 as well. How should I do this? I have no experience re gearing, i could take it in to somone like 4 wheel parts to do but I dont want to waste the money on having them put the built c8.25 on when I can do that myself. is there any way i can take the gears out of the dana 30 and have somone regear it then throw it back in myself ?

It's best if you have some set-up the gears for you. If you have the means to you could get away with removing the front axle and taking it to some one. Also if you are running 3.55 gears you will need a new carrier, since there is a split in the carriers.

welcome to the site, when they regear the d30, they'll need the entire axle, and most gear guys charge more if the axle is in the vehicle (it makes it awkward to work on, being under the vehicle.

checkout the colorado chapter, im sure you can find someone who works cheaper than 4wp... and most likely better as well, knowing colorado people.

if you install the 4.56 first, just pull the front driveshaft.

If you stay in 2wd you can have different ratios in the front and rear - just make sure you never go to 4wd. Its probably even a good idea to pull the front shaft just to make sure. Install the C8.25 with the 4.56 gears. Then when you are ready, drop the Jeep off and have someone do the front gears for you - it should probably cost around $600 for the gears, setup kit, and install.

Would it be ok to drive like that about an hour away? Theres this guy in Denver that does rehearse for a good price. When you say carrier do you mean the carrier bearing?

Not entirely true they make thick gears

Yes you can drive with different gear ratios as long as you don't put it in 4wd.

If you pull the front driveshaft, you'll be fine to drive an entire day. The carrier means the entire carrier that the ring gear bolts to.

Although I have not driven my XJ for a couple of years, it have 3.55 up front and 4.10 in the back. I pulled the front drive shaft and driven it more than 5,000 miles like that. With no front drive shaft it is and acts like any Two Wheel Drive XJ and there are hundreds of them here in South Florida.

if youre not in a hurry scour classifieds and look for a 30 already geared the way you want....got my 30 with an ARB,warn cover ,4.56s and extended bumps for $600....
