stuck back hatch on 99 xj

I have no emergency release panel to access the hatch guts. What can I do now. The handle has tension, a bent rod is keeping it from opening all the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Time to remove the inside panel of the hatch while working from INSIDE the back of the vehicle. IT's not fun or easy, but it can be done.
