so i was searching for something online today and i came across this site. i dont know if anyone else has seen it. it's basically a site against "four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles with large engines, high ground-clearance and a tall, boxy shape ". It lists the cherokee along with land cruisers and isuzu troopers and gives a bunch of B.S. numbers (15.2 mpg? wtf?). go to the site and check it out. theres some really funny pictures and entertaining "facts" on there. make sure to read the 'reasons to avoid' section. it's hilarious/sickening/ignorant/pisses me off. enjoy.

That's funny!!! My cherokee gets 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 in town (that's with 189,000 mile on the clock, a 4.5 inch lift, and 32 inch tires). Not only that it weighs less than some of my friends little rice rocket import cars. For example my old chrysler conquest (mitsubishi starion) weighed in at just over 3,900 pounds, the jeep weighs around 2,800 go figure. I don't know what they are smoking over there but it has to be much more harmful than any suv if it makes them post such stupid comments.

How is your XJ so light considering the lift and tires? Mine weighed in at 3460 with a 3/4 tank of gas and everything I could remove easily stripped out...

Must not have had the rear tires on the scale.
My chopped, stripped, and caged XJ weighs 3760lbs with 35"s.
NO way a full bodied Cherokee on 32"s weighs 1000lbs less than mine.

And 24mpg!
Must be a miracle Jeep!

Yeah Terry but you probably have at least 700 pounds of mud and crushed rock in your frame rails. ;)

My Jeep got 30mpg on a stretch coming home from Moab, while towing the egg!

I-70 has a lot of DOWNHILL portions ;)

i think its funny they want to raise taxes for those of us with these "unsafe vehicles." i have a jeep with messed up fuel problems that gets 6 miles to the gallon. i drive a ford with a 5.4 that gets like 13 mpg. i already pay like 50 millions times more than that guy that drives the honda prius hybrid. but i pay that cost for a reason. i haul stuff in my truck and i play in the jeep. neither of which can be done in a little hybrid car.

tree hugging english people amuse me.

I'd consider tree-hugging enviro-nuts amusing, if it weren't so obvious they were mentally defective. Even then, I'd simply give them a wide berth if they'd simply do the same for me in return.

My 1988XJ w/250K on the clock hovers around 16-18mpg in town, and 20-22mpg on freeway hauls. I can load a tonne in it at will, and only get slightly lower fuel mileage. It runs cleaner than many new vehicles. The data is not available for motorcycles, simply because they don't smog those damn things yet... So, why do they get carpool access? If it were due to an air-cooled engine, I'd see a lot more old VW Bugs in that lane with solo drivers as well.

Increased risk of a roads incident? Somehow, I think not - the all-around glass offers excellent visibility, my eyes are higher than those typically found in little rice-burning imports, and when was the last time you saw a Jeep (or SUV, even?) doing 80 going up a dashed white line in between traffic?

Mostly urban travel? Yeah, I suppose so. But, I often do it while hauling, and I have to be able to get to "remote" job sites as well. Something my 88 stocker w/30's can handle a lot better than a Prius or an Insight.

Towing? I've driven from ATL to SJC with a 3000# weight penalty, in a U-Hell box trailer (somewhat less aerodynamic than my XJ, in fact,) and didn't notice any trouble. Maintained fuel mileage as well, going across the country on I-10, I-40, and coming up on I-5. Try THAT with anything that Honda or Toyota makes! Easier with a bicycle, I'd think...

Lifted too far? It's still stock! Granted, I just "inherited" a 4" or so lift, but I won't be able to install it for a bit. Still, considering what I see Ford and Chevvy trucks lifted to (some of them I can probably walk upright under...) I don't think 4" is going to be too far, and I'll still only put 31" tyres under it - 33" max.

Maneuverability? I can do U-turns on narrow streets, and I have seen people in Mercedes sedans that can't manage that without clipping a kerb! So, my truck is fairly nimble.

Besides, if you want to talk about environmental impact, what do you suppose the effect of hitting an electric vehicle, or a hybrid, will be with all those batteries in there? Electrolyte spilling can't be good, and even a gel cell will leak if you crack the case - just not as much.

Besides, all this yakking about "Zero Emissions" on electric vehicles is a major misnomer - they're not "emissions free" but "emissions deferred." Don't you think the power plant is burning something to make the electricity to charge your electric car's batteries? Frankly, I don't think electrics belong in the HOV lane either - they make emissions as well, just not while they're driving (come to think of it, at least I generate tailpipe emissions while my engine is running. Electrics contribute to emissions and greenhouse gasses when they're NOT running. Am I missing something?)

Probably the only good thing about electrics and hybrids is the look I get when I confront these simpletons with logic - generally, it's like the screen going blank, or getting the "Blue Screen of Death" on a Windows machine. They just can't handle the fact that: A) I'm challenging their core beliefs, and B) I'm right. Probably more than they are.

They hate that.

I liked this quote:

"4x4s are among the most environmentally harmful vehicles on the market, emitting up to four times more CO2 than normal cars and only doing approximately 12 mpg in city traffic."
Lynne Featherstone – when Liberal Democrat London assembly spokesman on transport, and chairman of the London Assembly Transport Committee (now an MP)

WTF? 12 mpg in the city? I get 16-20 mpg ALWAYS and the only driving I really do is usually in a city, thank you very much. IMO, the most harmful vehicles are those effing huge trucks (like the Nissan Titan that my neighbor has) that rank rather high in the pollution/harmful emissions area. I doubt that most 4x4's produce 4 times the amount of emissions than regular cars... come on.

Precisely. I do enjoy the looks I get when I show my latest Smog results to these fools. You know, the one with all the zeroes on it...

I'll have to dig one up just to post the numbers - but it's agreeably low. Probably lower than most greasels, and comparable to some hybrids. And this is on a pre-OBD vehicle!

You know what? If I could get rid of that damn EGR valve (engine runs cleaner when it doesn't work anyhow...) and use my own method to lower combustion chamber flash temperatures, you'd probably see zeroes all across on results! If only the Kommisar of Air here in California would just get out of my way and let me work - I bet my emissions are lower than his...

(No, I'm not talking about flatulence - I've not met him. However, I can see that the entire CARB does contribute to global warming - they emit an amazing amount of hot air...)

And this is why I moved from the bay area to Oregon! No emmissions testing (With the exception of Medford and Portland), no sales tax, and my tags are good for 2 years...at a cost of $54 (it was something like $35 not that long ago).

I was looking at the hybrids, honda dealer across the street. The accord hybrid and the standard accord get within 2mpg of each other on hiway. Now why would I want to spend and extra $8K for a hybrid that gets 10mpg than the gas one, loose cargo space. Actually the cheapest TCO vehicle from manufacture to boneyard is the 2.5L wrangler, seem to remember cost per mile was like $.05 cents vs the maybach with was several dollars per mile..
The brits are also outlawing brush guards and what hood levels lowered so if you wack a child their heads will hit the flat of the hood instead of the nose...

what ticks me off are those dam fake tickets they print up and leave on "offending" vehicles. just cause they will send recycled paper doesn't mean its ok. do they really think that after i found one on my truck i would take it home and recycle the thing? how many trees does it take to make one of those shirts?

I've always felt that most enviromentilists are hypocrites. these people still use computers, eat McD's, and drive a vehicle that burns fossil fuels in some shape or form but will judge you for your choice in transportation.they'll complain about meat while standing in their leather shoes and tell you your using to much fuel in you suv and then turn around and turn up the thermostat to 90 in their massive mountain retreat.

its unfortunate that true enviromentilists message gets lost by the actions of websites like the Alliance. everyone can learn from one another, websites like theres don't help.

I get 8-10 mpg...

No cat converter...

I enjoy flicking my cigarette butts back onto the car behind me...

oh...

and I'd kill flipper for a tuna sandwich.

"Complain about meat while standing in their leather shoes?" Yeah - at least by eating beef, I'm putting more of the cow to use than they are.

Vegetarianism is another unattributed mental defect. Biologically, we are omnivorous. We are designed and built to eat pretty much everything, but there are also predator traits we have...
We can see things that aren't moving. A typical response of prey animals is to freeze - if a predator can't see something standing still, he don't eat.
We have both eyes foward on our heads. Why? It affords better depth perception for pouncing and striking. Check predators, check prey. What do you see different?
Our canine teeth (and, to a limited extent, our cuspid and bicuspid teeth as well) are remnants of fangs. Our forward teeth are incisors, designed to cut. Canines, cuspids, and bicuspids are designed to tear. You might find incisors on some herbivores, but only at the very front, and the rest of the teeth are molars for grinding plant fibres.

Those are the major traits, anyhow. I'm fairly sure there are more, but I honestly don't feel like dredging though my memory for it right now - I'm just taking a small break while writing a paper about Richard MacNeish (Google him if you're interested.) Taking time to think about an unrelated subject from time to time can help me move forward.

Besides, the last time I had a vegan get in my face about it, I had a simple reply. "Vegetables are what food eats." The look I got was truly priceless...
