Yer right Mike.... I am one tough mofo....... :D

But seriously, I only objected to 'Stang's blanket statement because the public (particularly the public that don't have law enforcement in the family) truely have no clue how things work.

To put the blame strictly on the Cops, the guys in the patrol cars is ignorant. Anyone who thinks the patrolmen out there have total authority to dictate what they'll do, when they'll do it and how they'll do it is sadly mistaken. The upper level administrators (Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants and even Sergeants) are responsible for how many Cops are assigned to pro-active police work, how many are assigned to traffic duty, and how many are assigned to work investigating crimes. Many cities have to survive on the revenue they can build..... so yeah, it'll seem like there's more cops writing tickets and not looking for "real crime". Law enforcement costs big money, so do you want higher taxes? Or let the speeders take up some of the slack?

But seriously, if the public actually knew how much pro-active policing and criminal investigations were currently being done...... would we in fact be doing our job correctly? To advertise what the Cops do would be to shoot themselves in the foot....... just as criminals thrive on the element of surprise and deceit, so must the Cops.

People also need to realize that when they call the Cops to go tell their neighbor to move the trashbags on the curb that are inches over the property line...... they're taking up time that could be used for other means.

Not to mention that if all calls for police service were treated with top priority, then the Cops would be busy all the time...... there has to be a handful of Cops available to respond to emergencies...... oh, say like a gunman at a church or school ...... or would you rather they all were settling neighbor disputes and looking for auto theives.......

That's my perspective anyway - not trying to fan any flame wars..... :D
Nothing personal I have been to your house I bought a BA10 5 speed from the 89 you were parting. You seemed like a pretty cool guy. I know higher ups control what you guys get to do. I don't blame the cops. I blame Gov who controls what they can and can't do. I feel sorry for most cops. They spend all this time busting some creep only to turn around have some bleeding heart judge and DA turn them loose. I am glad I am not a cop cause I would kick the Sh%T out most creeps you guys haul in. Just mad at system. And just seems to get worse. But thanks for being willing to go out there put with all the crap. Couldn't pay me enough to do that.

Me either, dealing with the general public in, well general, is a no go for me :yap:

Hey I have to say CO is the only state I've lived in that I routinely see staties helping motorists on the side of the road, so good for them I guess.

Yeah when I blew my coolant bottle( I hate those pieces of crap coolant tanks) on C470 Smokie stopped by check on me. Then couple days later blew my head gasket up in Evergreen local cop stopped to check on me. After I replaced the gasket I replaced the radiator with 91 and newer one. Jeep is much happier now. :yelclap: But it was nice for them to check on me.

LoL reminds me I need a new coolant bottle.
I have a leak somewhere low, around the radiator, driver's side, it's probably the radiator leaking

I'm good, I try to get a new one every 2 years or when the old one starts to look swollen just to be safe. This one is swelling after a year and a half

I'm never taking the GF to your neighborhood again, she had me trying to snag a loose dog to return to its house, fucking thing looked like it was going to eat me so I told her he was all good and we left, lol.

And the youngster's ignorance comes blazing through.....

Brutha, there ain't a cop out there that doesn't enjoy snagging the crook. That's primarily why most cops do the job! You act as though Chris' Jeep was the only crime that happened that day and curse the cops as apathetic and lazy....... You need to re-examine your principles and pay more attention to the world around you.

Thing is, it's all about priorities. Property crimes are low on the list. And this thing about fingerprints..... Yeah, it'd be nice if there were enough cops and crime scene techs out there to devote the proper level of attention to every stolen car recovered....... but that just isn't realistic. And even if they found fingerprints other than Chris'...... how are you gonna prove they belong to the guy that stole the car? I bet at least 2 or more punks rode around in Chris' Jeep while it was missing...... who's prints belong to the one that broke the window and cracked the column? Have you looked at the interior of 99% of cars out there? Textured plastic, fabric and vinyl. Not good surfaces to take prints from. I'd also be willing to bet that it's entirely possible that the crooks were young enough to not have their prints on record yet. That's why auto theft is a good gang initiation ritual....... newbie banger isn't in the system yet..... prints are no good. Oh and not to mention that it's universally understood among crooks: Gloves - good, bare hands - bad.

Yeah, I would like to see them look at the Walmart tapes - on the off chance that the crooks actually used another car that could be traced back to them..... but in all likelyhood, it was another steal that they dumped and all jumped into the Jeep.

But I digress........

Chris, I should have the column and/or parts to repair the column too if you need 'em.

X2 There are law enforcement officers that do care and would love to help BUT as Yellaheep said everything has a priority and stolen personal property sits low on the list.

Saw Chris' XJ today when he came to get repair parts.

Man, did he get off lucky! I've seen my fair share of stolen Cherokees both in my career and at the salvage yards....... these crooks did the least amount of damage I think I've seen yet. Super clean punch of the ign. lock - the key cylinder was still useable so he didn't have to change all his locks.

I had hoped to be able to remove the lock cylinder housing from the parts column and not have to replace the whole column...... but damned if it's one piece that is pressed onto/around the main tube of the column. You'd have to remove the air bag, clock spring, all other components just to replace it.

So, he'll be doing a full column swap....... but as an added bonus.... he'll come away with cruise control which he didn't have before the theft! :D

It was pretty cool to actually have ALL the parts he needed/wanted to fix his rig - glass, trim, column, cruise parts - all ready to go.

Thanks for shopping at the House 'O Heeps! :D

I understand what you guys are saying about it being a minor crime, but if you have ever had anything stolen from you, well you feel violated.

It isn't a major crime, however here in Texas you can use "deadly force" to stop someone from stealing your property. In fact you can use "deadly force" to stop anyone that is committing a felony. You just better be damned sure that they are committing a felony. ;)

The same thing happened to us.

Back in September 06'...

2 Days after we put new 33 inch swampers on our new 2 week old 99', Someone stole it from the Walmart on Wads and Colfax.

We were forced to stay in my 21' trailer for a bit and we were staying at the Walmart. The trailer batteries were going dead so I Dropped the trailer, turned around the truck and hooked up the jumper cables.

Someone had the balls to jump in with the hood up, and jam it into reverse, ripping the jumper cables from the trailer and running the entire length of the parking lot in reverse. While I am right there in the trailer with the lights on and the door open.

As SOON as I hear it go into gear, I exploded out of the trailer and took off after them. I was catching up to them fast because they had to stop, get out and put the hood down. I had almost caught up with them when I slipped in the wet grass from the sprinklers being on. I fell and racked my knee and my wrist really bad and could not continue the chase. As I laid on the ground for a minute, Hearing the XJ drive off at a high rate of speed, all I could think was its gone, the tires are sold, the truck gutted. Didn't even have it payed for yet.

I got a ride to my 16 foot cube van and that is what we had to drive.
The hitch for the trailer was thankfully on the ground next to the trailer.

Between 7 and 9 days later, I get a message on my cell phone. "We have recovered your vehicle" I was freakin out.

Turns out, some 20 some year old Woman with kids was caught driving it not even a BLOCK from where it was stolen. The Denver West Inn. Right across the street. If we had still been where we were when it was taken, we would have seen it drive by.

They recovered the LOCKED truck, but not the Grey Sentry key that was in it.

They painted anything that was black, to this REALLY bright white that does not even come close to matching the rest of the truck. There was runs from paint dripping off the mirrors onto the door. The entire grill was now white, The black rock rails, the fender flair brackets on the front fenders because they had ripped the fender flair's off. Over spray everywhere.

They took the temp tag out of the tinted back window, put it in a bag, and then installed it into a nice sealed license plate holder on the tail gate.

Stolen from our truck:
Brand New Baby seat
Two new cans of formula
Over $50 worth of baby clothes
Over $100 worth of tools
Brand new 60" Highlift jack
My RC rock crawler ($450 - one tire)
10 disc CD changer + Infinity Amp from 01' grand cherokee
Cobra CB radio and antenna
My wallet with my bank card, credit cards and many other things other then actual money. A bank statement that was in the truck was found at the bank a few blocks away in the parking lot and the bank called me to tell me about it. When I came back with the Police and asked to look at the security tapes they would not allow me to have any type of access to their camera's. this was before the jeep was recovered, 3 days after it was stolen.

The key needed to be reprogramed for $175 and they screwed it up the first day. So I had to wait another day for them to get a different programer to try again.
It cost us out of pocket, $400 for impound + the $175 for the key!

It almost didn't make it to the gas station the gauge wouldn't even move from the bottom. I couldn't believe I put my last $10 in the tank and it came up only to E.

There was over 500 more miles on it when we got it back.

They Added:
Pioneer 3 way speakers in the rear
Tools property of Walmart
Sunglasses
Ashtray
Small bag of crack or meth or something I threw out the window when I found it
Return stickers from walmart that could be used to return an item that was never purchased in the first place. SCAMART.

The truck has never been the same since. The Key programing Killed the ECU somehow. Throws a general ecu failure must replace ECU code and will not clear codes. The engine has not put out anywhere near what it should since. Needs an ECU bad.

Police told me they would keep me informed on what is going on with the case and all that and I never heard anything back from them.
I called and got the run-around a few times and eventually gave up.

Because of a clause in the Contract with the place I bought it from, if the truck is stolen while you owe money on it, you instantly owe the balance due. I had to take out a $3000 loan to cover it.

Then insurance Totaled it. a few weeks after the loan and they sent a check I had to deliver to the dealer for them to cash for me because it was in their name.

My ass is sore just thinkin about this.

Oh well, Getting the rig ready for Moab in October now!

wow don't ya just wanna load up the 12ga and hurt stupid people. glad you got your rig back though
