Spyware Tools?

What's everyone using for spyware/popup detection? I used to use Ad-Aware, but that recently let me down. I've switched to Spyware Doctor and tried the new Microsoft Beta also. I know there's not a single program that can catch them all, just curious to see what everyone is using and how they like it.

Depends on what I am trying to fix. I use all of these: Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spy Sweeper, BHO Demon, About Buster, Hi-Jack This, CWShredder, Rootkit Revealer, Advanced Uninstaller Pro

A third vote for SpyBot Search&Destroy. It works, it's free, 'nuff said.

Oh, and the Google Toolbar kicks a lot of a$$ blocking pop-ups. It's gotten smarter and allows good pop-ups (like new windows on this site) now, too.

HiJackThis has been the ONLY spyware buster that dug deep enough into my registry to deal with spyware and/or browser hijackers.

Be really careful on what you delete. This LINK TO HIJACKTHIS is really good as it allows you to paste your log after you've run HiJackThis, and have it analyzed as to what is safe or not safe to remove....

as many have posted here no one spyware software will do everthing. I fix networks and pc's all day and the only thing that works is to use multiple killers. I find that most will be gotten with a combo of adaware and the new beta of microsoft anti-spywar. Which by the way is just Giant's spyware killer. Good luck.

Microsoft.
I'm pretty sure the intent of this thread was to look for spyware removal tools, and not guaranteed ways of installing spyware. Thanks for playing...

IMO

If you know how to use Hijackthis for cleanup....

Just create a user with poweruser permissions and log into that to surf the web... Log out to do anything else...

Problem solved... If you surf without permissions to install anything Windows security solves it..

It's how we do it at work anyway

EDIT:

For what it's worth.... I personally think that ALL the programs that do auto removal suck.. AdAware, Spybot.. and if you arent using those two for "lazy" spyware removal you could very easily be installing Spyware right along with the cleanup tool..

I open hijack this.. run a scan....
go through and eliminate the obvious incorrect entries.

Most the valid entries will be registered to program names..

Be aware of what is supposed to be installed on your PC and if you see a program you don't recognise copy the file name/web address/ etc. into a google search and see what comes up.

99.99999% of the time if it's something bad it's going to come up on an anti spyware site with instructions on how to remove it.. Other times it will come up with one of the many service list pages... and tell you exactly what it is..

Remove all the bad entries.. reboot your PC and run the scan again... if anything bad you already removed comes back up start in safe mode and run the tool...

Or you can just remove the entries from the registry and remove any associated files..

That's all the atuomatic programs are doing..

Hijack this doesn't get out of date as it doesn't use Definition files.. It just searches for services associated with IE.. you make the call on what is good or bad..

trust me... either surf with limted rights on a user without install rights.... or learn to do the cleanup manually...

Been using Webroot Spysweeper & their Windows Washer 5.0 for almost a year with no problems. Had so much spyware that I could hardly get online. Did have to reformat the hard drive to get rid of it though.

Webroot "Spy Sweeper"

&

Norton

I use Spybot- Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Norton AntiVirus 2005 along with some manual removal to get rid of stuff that those don't get rid of. The only thing I haven't been able to get rid of is some stuff called NewDotNet or something like that.

Thanks for the replies. I've also heard good things about HiJackThis, maybe I'll look into that. Making a user with less rights sounds like a good idea, but that only works if your administrator login has a password, correct? Otherwise the spyware can do a "run as" and install that way.
