Spudderin.....

My check engine light has been on for a while and it's tellin' me "evap leak". I thought I fixed it by changing a couple of the hoses that come off the side of the motor. Light didn't come on until about a week later. So that was not it. The light was on but the Jeep was running ok until last night.

For those of you who have had the "vapor lock heat soak" issue happen you will know what I mean when I say it feels like that constantly now. When I hit the gas it spudders BIG TIME and feels like it's going to cut out. It is idling ROUGH and the whole Jeep is shaking.

Taking it to a mechanic tomorrow but I thought I would get some thoughts from you guys before hand.

Thanks :-)

Mark

could be a bad gas cap.
what code you pulling? P0440?

Have you checked pressure from the tank and injectors? That heat soak sucks, but should only be intermittent after a hot run, then short cool down no. Clogged injector???

You could have two different issues also. If you need a second opinion PM me or let me know what the mechanic finds. I've got all the diagnostic equipment for this stuff so any time you need something let me know. If its cutting out or studdering it could be a bad TPS or a fuel supply issue, or mostI likely andI'll ignition problem, etc...generally speaking I never really see an EVAP problem cause a driveability issue but anything is possible and I have seen some weird stuff in the past.

Lemme further explain :-) The jeep was running fine until last night and now it won't stop. Almost like a clogged injector or not enough air being pulled in. Hopefully it won't cost me too much - haha

Hook up with Alex E and have him do a fuel pressure test. Then do a fuel volume test. Could be clogged fuel filters starving the fuel pump.

Thanks Alex... I will keep you posted.

Mark,
My 00XJ would run fine and then start sputtering. Sometimes it sounded like it was gasping for air and other times starving for fuel. The code was P0193(?) that could be either a CPS or the cam sensor. When I went to test the cam sensor, for 0-5VDC output I saw the sensor drive was warbling. The hold down plate was tight but the sensor drive was moving. I pulled the sensor drive out and I could not turn the shaft by hand.

The shaft from a dealer is $300 + an additional $70 for the sensor.
From NAPA $59 including the sensor.

The engine shouldn't have run, but it did, Weirdest thing but when I first encountered the problem I was thinking fuel issue.

Mark, I have brand new spare CPS and a Cam Sensors (both for 1998 but should fit yours). You can install them to see if it fixes the problem.

Edit: on second thought its probably not the CPS. In my experience, they tend to totally fail rather than cause sputtering - but you are welcome to try my new one.

Thanks Josh!!!! I had the CPS changed at 70k and you are right, when they go - they go. the spuddering might be what Boatwrech suggested. By the reaction from my mechanic this morning when I described the issue I think he had a good idea s to what it might be. What ever it is, it's not going to be too major and probably a cracked hose or bad sensor :-)

Thanks Josh, Boat and Alex for the input. I'll keep you guys posted.

Oh - and the only reason I am not fixing it myself is because I have almost zero time right now and I can't take time off of work :-( Or else I would have a couple of you over to help me figure this one out. She needs some TLC anyways so I am having the shop give it a once over and check everything. Might as well right :-)

Shop called - Evap issue was a cracked hose but the spsuddering is bad plugs and coil pack is toast. He said #5 & 6 had barely any spark and the plugs are done. Hope fully she will be purring when this is done :-) We'll see.

Cool, easy fix!

Yeah I am hoping that was it too..... $500 later - haha $100 for the diagnostic and the coil pack was $230. Only $67 in labor (sweet). I had em do an oil change and top everything off so that was an extra $60. Almost a 100mile tune up. All I need to do now is replace the belt, air filter and clean a couple sensors and I'm golden.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas. I wasn't too worried about it but I know it's always good to throw this stuff out there in case it happens to someone else :-)
