I have a 1982 Chevrolet K10 4x4 pickup to complement the XJ. I can't find any forum on it or help very easily. Here is the problem: The transmission is cracked at the top where it meets the transfer case. There is a square flange with four bolts about 10 by 10. I have tried everything, locktite, RTV, universal gasket, whatever, and I can't stop tranny fluid from leaking out the bottom of this flange. I don't think it is coming from the crack at the top, but I think that crack is making the meeting of surfaces weak, causing the lower two bolts to come loose and thus, the leak. Is there an easy way to fix this? What about transmission stop leak. It leaks about 1 small drop every couple of seconds while running. I figure maybe someone has some Chevy experience or even has had this problem on an XJ, so help would be great!!

What kind of transmission do you have, stick or auto? You're probly correct in that the crack at the upper side of the transfer case adapter is causing your leak. The most likely cause of your leak is probly coming from your output shaft leaking, or maybe the front input shaft on the transfer case is leaking. You can try one of transmission sealers in a bottle, but that will only be a bandage.

It is an auto, and the crack is actually on the tranny, not the tcase. I don't think the crack is leaking fluid itself, just weakening the structure of the tranny. It just doesn't seem like there should be fluid leaking from there, maybe it is leaking out of the output shaft?

Not sure about the early Chev.s but all of the post 86-87 Chev.s I`ve worked on, inside the adaptor, between the tranny and transfer was dry, except for an occasional very small seep.
Cracking the tranny is a fairly common thing. People stick a long bolt in there and overtighten. Have seen many tranny to adaptor hookups, with three good bolts. Never seemed to hurt anything.
Just guessing, but I believe there is a vent on the top of the tranny and if it´s anything like the 700R4 vent, it gets plugged up with mud (pretty small diameter) and the tranny fluid is likely to seep in numerous places, especially at high RPM´s. Might even blow fluid out the dipstick. If you find the dipstick popped up a little, it´s a sure sign the vent is plugged.
I´m trying to remember what the rear seal looks like on the TH 300 or 400 tranny, but it´s not happening. If you have te 700 R, I´ve got couple in the garage and can go take a look. If you have the 203 tranfer it´s a real brick and heavy, but other than that it´s no big deal to split the transfer from the tranny.

Thanks alot, guys. 8mud, I agree, it seems like there isn't supposed to be fluid there. There isn't really room for a factory gasket. I will check the vent, but pardon my ignorance, how do I tell which tranny. It is supposed to be a 4 speed auto, I guess 700R4, but not sure. It has a square pan, if that helps. Only seems to have three gears on tach, but havent gone over 50, so don't know. I wouldn't think a clogged vent could cause such a huge leak, however, the underside is absolutely caked with mud, so it surely is possible! Thanks again, any further input is certainly welcome!
