Someone, please give me a brake.

OK, I'm still getting my feet wet with my 3 month-old (used) '93 XJ, 2WD,
non-ABS, and so I need some brake parts info clarification.

Is there a definitive year-model interchange reference chart for
brake parts used on this puppy?

Everytime I go to get brake pads, and shoes, and bits...the counter-person
at the local friendly parts store bombards me with a litany of questions, ie:

...Grand Cherokee, or small Cherokee?

...Year?

...ABS, or non-ABS?

...4WD, or 2WD?

...Auto, or manual?

...9" drums, or 10"?

...4-door, or 2-door?

...Police Package? Taxi? Government?

I have also run into conflicting information.

Are all of the front pads essentially of the same dimensions for
all of the model years?

The illustration of the rear brake springs and shoe linkage in
the Mopar factory manual are very much different than what
I found is actually installed on my car.

I would feel much more confident that I was getting the correct part(s)
if I were already armed with the correct part numbers, or a reference chart.

I've tried a "Google" Search - but I won't live long enough to go through
and click on all of the 93,573 return hits.

Does anybody already have an online link for this stored in their
"Favorites" file?

Suggestions?

Thanks, all.

I'm afraid my reply will be no help, although I do sympathize. I also own a '93 2WD. I just recently replaced pads and shoes all-round. It was the second time for the pads because I didn't do anything to the rear the first time :dunce:.

It seems my '93 is a bit odd (which seems to be one of the more endearing qualities of the XJ line - i.e. its many eccentricities). In my case, when I order pads for the front of my 2WD I have to order for a 4WD. The front axle is a "dead" pipe mounted with 4WD equipment. I don't know if this is some kind of HD package or if the assembly line just ran out of 2WD parts. Either way, if the 4WD stuff is tougher I'm not complaining.

Now I've done alot of Mopar drum brakes and never had any trouble, and I'm not sure what happened with my XJ but when I took the RR drum off there was the remains of a spring lying in the bottom merrily wearing a groove in the drum. I got the hardware kit (for the 9"x2 1/2" brakes it's around $12 for both sides) and then lost one end of the adjuster (the self-adjuster hardware kit is about $9 for one side). After finishing all four brakes I soon developed a nasty grinding noise that was intermittent and changed pitch randomly. Also, the e-brake handle, that had been nice and snug, began to creep higher and higher with each pull. So, I pulled the drum off the RL, where the grinding seemed to be, and all the adjusting hardware fell out on the ground (the self-adjusting hardware kit for the left side costs the same as for the right - about $9). In the end, the brakes are now very snug and give me a great deal of confidence - or, certainly much more so than before.

As for dealing with the parts store, have an extra ride available or live close by, cause once you get the rig apart (which is the only way to know that you've got the wrong part) it might be awhile before it's rolling again.

Good Luck,
