What are the prefered snakes to let loose in my house to eradicate the rodents that have decided to move in? I'm in a losing battle with these flea bearing varments, shots have been fired and blood has only been shed once. They are too small and too fast to hit consistantly with a .177 projectile.

garden snake? since they are non-poisonous....
why not get a cat. A real barn cat, the kind that get as big as small dogs.

Yep, I would say go with cats..

I've seen even the laziest cats spring to action at the presence of mice.

The higher metabolism of the cat might also mean that the population is eradicated sooner.

I've never really been a cat person plus I have a small Parrott.
Just shot this little fawk...

You an borrow Simon for a week or two. He takes care of all four footed creatures and leaves feathered ones alone!

I aggree with OneTon ... Black Rat Snake. You'll never know their there other than the absence of rodents.

As a wildlife biologist (specializing in reptiles), I'd like to point out that most snakes that feed on rodents also eat birds. I've removed a number of snakes over the years that have gotten trapped inside aviaries after finishing off the enclosed bird and getting stuck behind bars. Black Rat Snakes are perfect rodent control devices, just make sure the parrot is secure. Kingsnakes and Bullsnakes are also good for the job. You can PM me if you want more help.

If you were closer, I'd let you borrow my dog :D He kills any animal that moves: every time the possums in the area start to migrate and decide to go through my yard, he takes care of them :D Then he proudly layes them out on the patio.

Traps work pretty good, set with crunchy peanut butter. After the only real cold spell this winter, I mean below 0, I started seeing mice in the 140+ year old farm house I live in. I reset all my traps and caught 9 of them suckers in 3 days. I put one in the kitchen broom closet and one on the back porch. All the 9 were caught in these two traps.
I have seen no more since then and have only caught 1. I think the traps did a very good job, and I didn't have to worry about more animals running around. Besides my two Doberman who did nothing to help the problem.

I think the only option for you is to move away from SF to Auburn, CA.

That is the option I like the best and believe me I'm working on it.
Traps are set, I'll see what I get uppon my return on Sunday.

Black rat snakes do wonders for varmits and don't mess with people.

Not the black snakes around here! Then again they may be called coach wips. Those things will chase you down!

you know, I'm looking at that picture again, and i'm laughing my ass off!

does anyone else see the genius and humor in jes' decision to include a quarter in the picture to show the scale of the rodent????

too damn funny!

Actually I'm surprised he didn't put a can of Bud Light there to show scale.
