I used to have a WARN 10,000 Winch on a work XJ. It was the best winch that I have ever had. It is positive locking, so it cannot jump out of gear... perfect for lifting a person up a cliff face or tying off that auto that is teetering on the brink.
I know that in Alaska it may be hours or days before anyone can get to you. Being self-sufficient and able to pull yourself out of a jamb is a big deal.
Get the biggest capacity winch you can afford (and front end will support). The extra capacity means that is will not overheat, or fail at a critical moment.
Look at the Series 9 or 12 - Industrial DC Winches. The last winch you'll ever need!
A pal has the 9.5SI Warn part #WAR67600 9500# capacity about $1800
He loves it!
Oh, yeah - synthetic rope is a must. It'll never rust (and therefore weaken)!
Eagle River??? I've got family up there... retired Air Force Lt. Col.
