Secific exhaust question

I am seeing ppl talking about upgrading the xhaust of the XJ's but have not seen anyone talk about what I want to do:

I would like to go from the stock exhaust ( for now ) out 2.5 to a highflo cat (btw anyone with part #'s? ) and into a single in dual out flowmaster to get a simulated duals look.

My question is this: will I still get the "sound" of the flowmaster? I have one on my v-8 chevy truck and like it but not sure about the I-6; is there enough poop there to make it not soundlike a fourbanger?

I don't know anything about the 40,50 or 70 series numbers - just by site mostly on the mufflers so if you shoot out numbers then please a little background.

Thanks,

If you really want to get some gains out of the exhaust, pull the head pipe down and get a new 2.25 head pipe made (for light mods on 4.0). Then do the cat back. Right off the header flange there is a getto factory kink that necks down to like 1.5 inches or so. It's very restrictive. I think that the 50 series 3 chamber is the quietest and least resonant inside and out. I'm not a flowmaster guy unless they're on a V-8. You can't really compare flowbie's or any mufflers in general on a V-8 to a I-6, they're different motors. I'd advise to stay on the quiet side though, then you won't get annoyed down the road and wish you had sumptin else:)

I agree with most of what funkytee says I just installed a flowmaster 70 series on my 01 XJ 4.0 with a carsound high flow cat (made by magnaflow ) and 2.5 inch pipe. he's right about the down pipe also, on my 01 the down pipe is allready 2.5 inch so you will want get an aftermarket one for yours, Banks makes a very nice one. as far as how they sound I like the 70 series on the inline 6 its got a nice tone but its by no means loud . I personaly think inline 6 cylinders sound kinda ricey with louder mufflers, but if you like ricey then thats up to you I got a great system from an online source called "kolak" I wish I had pictures because let me tell you, this thing fit perfectly ,very nice constant diameter pipe, no rattles nothing , I could not ask for a better system, I liked it so well I bought 2, no joke , I also own an 04 grand cherokee columbia with a 4.7 H.O and I got a system for it , 70 series flowmaster , 3 inch pipe sounds great very deep ,its actually kinda lloud at some rpm's, fit and finish was also perfect on this system (for the record I owned a 71 grand prix 400 ci 430 horsepower with headers and dual 40 series flowmasters this car was loud ( set of car alarms at idle) and I built alot of it my self and also had alot of other cars like this so I do know a little about "loud" but its also personal preference , si do alittle research and you will get what you want heres the email for kolak [email protected] sorry this was so long but I just couldnt stop LOL

I have a short video clip with sound showing the rear pipes on my XJ. It has a single in, dual out flowmaster 50 series. Not as loud as the 40 series but still sounds awesome. If somebody would host the video I would be more than happy to show it.

Keep in mind I also have completely custom exhaust with a Banks header and many other mods. But it should give you a good idea.

My local exaust man told me that duels on a unlifted xj would be very hard, but I think he was just not wanting to do it. It will be tight on the drivers side with the angle of the shock. Here are a few pics to see the look. Personly I like the one that has the pipes on each side.

The green Jeep with duals is mine.

It is the one I have a video clip for. It has the single in dual out flowmaster 50 series. I have a hi-flow cat., custom piping and head pipe and a Banks torque tube.

I have many other things done to the engine, but the exhaust was the greatest improvement.

I think the blue Jeep with stripes is Ghetto's Jeep. It's one awesome XJ. But I think his is single pipes with a dual tip. Not sure though.

Thanks to all for the posts! Sorry I haven't responded but have been busy workin.

I like the dual and have had a pretty hot truck which was loud but don't think that the 6 could be that loud - I know what you mean about the car alarms man....

I just want it to be a nice mellow tone at idle that doesn't sound "ricey" in the higher rpm ranges...it's supposed to be an H.O. and I would like the beefy sound all trough the rpm range so maybe the 50 flowmaster??????

Can't afford the aftermarket headers and custom downtubes ect... but have a crack exhaust shop here that can build works of art with some suggestions to go on.

Any other high flow cats (brands) besides the magnaflo mentioned in case they don't carry that brand?

Thanks again for the posts....THIS PLACE ROCKS!!!

I tried that streamloaders thing. It only allows other to see it if I pay. Oh well.

The Torque Tube is just what Gale Banks calls it's header.

Well that sucks, 'cuse I wanted to hear/see it. Oh' well.

If you want power/economy, duals, even simulated, is the wrong way to go on an XJ. Separating the exhaust downstream, like after the muffler, messes up the pulses of the exhaust, and makes it kind of erratic, allowing less flow and velocity. No offense to anyone who has them, but I think they look wrong on an XJ. But if you want it for looks, more power to you.

You can just get a high flow cat with the same dimentions from basically anywhere and then just buy a 40 series flowmaster since there the loudest (deepest) toned mufflers. I plan on getting a 40 series myself son and then just adding a nice phat 4"chrome tip! Oh yeah, dual outlets aint gonna increase HP so its all 4 looks.

I agree. Just having dual tips will not increase horsepower. It is just for looks. But it will not harm HP either.

Whatever is your tastes are. For me Duals is only for the streets. Off-road they are just another thing to get hung up on.
