Sea Foam

For my 88 with 150K. runs well, but just wondering if sea foam would give a a boost of life.

In the TB?
In the Gas tank?
In the oil?

What are the pros/cons to Sea Foam.

What are the precautions and what needs to be done after?

Or should I just stay away from it?

Do you have to change the plugs or oil right after?

I have read that it smokes like a mo'fo like maybe too much to do in the front yard without the nieghbors freaking out?

only when you puy it in the tb but only for a min or two other than that puting it in the gas tank, oil just cleans valves injectors and so on. i put it in my 90 xj and it idaled better and got some power out of it

the smoke show is awesome, down the tb it's a great decarbonizer. personally i won't put it in my oil though. i had friend do that, it cleans great, but he had to change the oil twice to get it all out. it thins out the oil something fierce; makes me worry about bearings....

Seafoam is a miracle in a can. I used it on my 90 XJ with over 302,xxx on the original motor and it passed emissions everytime with flying colors.
My engine did however meet its demise a few weeks ago but at 302,xxx I cant say that I am not PROUD. I got another low mileage, ( 80,000ish mile engine that is getting cleaned up and installed in its place and I will rebuild that one and use it once again. I know that seafoam got me a little more out of my engine and I will use it proudly in this engine to and see if we can get this one over 250,000 miles or more.

Have you ever heard of the Seafoam "Chinese Water Torture?"
It worked really well on my 3 of my cars, and not well at all on another.

I'm pretty tired right now, and I don't want to explain the entire thing, but here's a link to where I got it.--> http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=35053
(Yes, I'm a volvo fanatic)

The last time I did it on my '83 Turbo Intercooler, I actually pulled 1/2" chunks of crud out of the bottom of the oil pan, which weren't there at the oil change before that (I don't let other people work on my cars). I then flushed the engine with paint thinner, and then changed the oil twice, and it ran like a dream.

I'd read to take a "spare" vacuum line from the engine, and stick it in the Sea Foam, letting the engine vacuum suck the product in. Also seem to remember you need to regulate the throttle while you're doing it so the engine doesn't stall out.

I've used seafoam and it does work, mostly used it to clean the intake. As for fuel system cleaning, for that I use Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner NOT fuel injector cleaner, FUEL SYSTEM, in the 20 oz bottle and about 3/4 of a tank to get the mix a tad higher.
I do not put any additives in my oil, I also run Mobil-1 10/30 and mobil or K&N filters so I never have any sludge build up issues. When my #3 injector stuck open on my original engine and took out #3 cylinder we pulled the valve cover to use on the Jasper reman, my valve train area looked new, that was around 310,000mi. When the jasper went in I broke it in for 500, did an oil change with conventional oil, 1000mi more and went straight to mobil-1.
For cleaning the TB, two methods, use a sensor safe spray while it's running paying careful attention to NOT spraying it into any of the sensor slots or removing the TB and cleaning it on the bench with the sensors removed. On the bench with the senors removed is the best way, takes an hour or so.

In the oil: 1 quart of K-1 just before each normal oil change will do fine with a 5 min idle. It a lot cheaper then SF.
Top end cleaners of any kind: Sometimes help prevent run-on in older carbonated cars. Can help prevent or reduce pre-ignition. Maybe helpful if you burn some oil. You may even open up the poop port and get a few more ponies. BUT (IMO) in most cases a waste of time.
If it ant brok don't fix it.
In the gas tank: If it starts good runs and idle fine. Passes the EPA test. Then way do it.
Very few problems reported with the use of SF. But thing do go bad. So (IMO).
If it ant brok don't fix it. Else luck.

Thats an old trick. Just take the garden sprayer hose and spray into your intake while the engine is hot. Regulate the water to keep it from dying and work the throtlle at the same time. The steam breaks up carbon on the intake ,valves and cylinder head. Do it while the engine is HOT. It fixes all kinds of problems. If you run the math and fiqure how short a time each valve is open you will see that it can handle a pretty good stream of water from the hose. Rev it up and bog it with the spray but keep it running above idle. do it for about 15 seconds. Don't let it die.

NO, that is really bad advice to give to a novice, as a novice many years ago I warped TWO mustang 6 cylinder heads on my moms 66 and she was not pleased. You can dribble it in, very slowly and work the throttle but even now I prefer a regular top end cleaner like from GM or Mopar. If I was to use water I would use a mister like from an amway bottle or something, it may take longer but should not damage the engine.
