want to put a gasket on that thermostat before I replace it. Then I will drain and refill with coolant and water. Check pump for leaks and if none and that is the fix that's great. However, if leak or possible bad pump because still overheating I'll take to my buds place. He owns LoneStar automotive here and helps me out a lot diagnosing and fixing my heeps.
