Rubicon Trip this Summer

Okay, to start narrowing down dates, I'm thinking sometime during the week of
July 15th or
Aug 12th or
Aug 19th.
For those that expressed interest so far(Mike, Dan, Webdog), how's that sound? Any dates you definitely can't make?

As far as dates to avoid, the organized Jeep parades this year are:
34th Jeep Jamboree Fri 8/3- Sun 8/5 Trail closed
60th Jeepers Jamboree Thur 7/26-Mon 7/30 Trail closed

I'll be trailering up to Tahoe and storing the tow rig/trailer at one of the casinos and driving to the trail head at Loon (same thing I did last year).

Hey Art... the only dates I definitely cannot go are July 20-28 as I have a tentative family vacation planned that week. (so July 15th might be tight for me).

The rest of the dates look good, and I would lean toward August 12th.

But, I have hearings this summer, and the definitive schedule has not yet been released.... until that schedule is published, I cannot commit.

Cool, we got some interest and we just may pull this run together! Based on what I'm hearing, let's rule out July altogether, and shoot for week of Aug 12th as first choice. I'd like to firm up the exact dates within the next week or so in order to plan with work, etc. So far I'm thinking meet up at Loon Lake staging area on Monday morning 8/13 and head out on the trail by 10am.

Okay, realizing everyone is still tentitive, here's a preliminary roll call of everyone who chimed in with some interest in going.

Let me know when you're >90% committed (or definitely out), and I'll update:

Rubicon Trail, 8/13-8/16

Never been wheeling north of Panamint ,Ridgecrest (never really needed to). So it's 3 days there right with 1/2 to 3/4 day drive up and the same home? Roughly 5 days?? Just checking if wife comes she'll need to schedule off her clients if not I can stay longer.

You gonna drive the A-Van up? I have a trailer you can borrow but we need to look it over. I welded the fenders on but haven't run the wiring yet. It is diamond plate deck!
Weighs about 1500 to 2k pulls really well so with the XJ and all should be about 5 to 5.5K. It dovetails in the back, I haven't made ramps because I don't think I'll need them with my 36's. It's shorter and a little narrower than my expanded metal trailer but you can use either one and I;ll use the other if I go.

I would plan for 4 days on the trail and two for travel (1 day up, 1 day back), 6 days total. If you can only swing 5 days off, then what some guys did was head back out to the Loon side on the third day (Wed) instead of continuing on to rubicon springs. But if it's your first time on the Rubicon, plan for at least 4 days on the trail so you're not feeling rushed.

We'll play it by ear based on how things pan out, but this is what we did last year...

Mon travel to Buck Island Lake, camp at Buck
Tue hike/fish,
Wed hike/fish morning w/ late start to Rubicon Springs, camp at Rubicon Springs
Thur late start up Cadillac Hill and out to Tahoe

I'm in if I can get the jeep ready.

still need rocker guards, rear locker, shackle relocation, front bumper, cut-n-fold rear quarters. new Rad, trans cooler/fan.

I would drive my jeep up and back.

"It dovetails in the back"...you mean the shape, right, and not when you're towing it? :D

If I remember correctly, it took us a full day to get to base camp back in 2010

Yep...

I would expect to spend one full day on the road up and one full day back.

It's about 10-11 hours from place in San Diego to Loon Lake... driving the Jeep, without a ton of stops.

I'm going to put the dates on my calendar... and if the hearing schedule for the summer cooperates, I am there for sure.

I like heading out on the trail on a Monday to avoid weekend crowds.

In 2010, we rented a group camp site on Ice House road just north of Union Valley Reservoir. It wasn't too expensive, and it was very big with plenty of room for all of us. You could probably park 15 XJ's there and still have plenty of room.

Anyway, since the plan is to hit the trail Monday, is there any interest in getting that camp spot again on Sat and Sun nights. Drive up Saturday and spend Sunday enjoying the Ice House area (which is awesome!!).

There are waterfalls to hike to nearby... you can fish in the stream or on several lakes in the area... you can find some open space and shoot clay pigeons or set up a rifle range against a hill... (or worse case... it will give you some time to swap out your busted unit bearings!!)...

It's a pretty fun area to spend some time in before heading out to the trail.

Anyone interested?

That group camp is in my top 5 most beautiful camp sites, right behind sequoia/kings canyon

As for busted unit bearings, they help get you to buck lake before dark :eyes:

Yea, I'm up for spending some time near the Ice House Area that weekend. Didn't know you can shoot in that area...I picked up a Marlin 336 I haven't even shot yet.

I would probably drive up on Saturday just to have the extra day....

but I don't have any unit bearings so that's not a problem :D
