Rubicon trip for 2010????

You can't really spend too much time on the Rubicon. It's not just about running the trail, which you can do in a day depending on the group and any possible breakdowns. The camping is very nice, and after all the work to get ready to go, and the long drive up there, it's great to take a lay day at Buck Island Lake or Rubicon Springs and swim and chill out, and not have to break camp and pack up. Hell, I'd spend 3 nights at Buck Island and run the trail backwards one day and go up True Big Sluice and then back down the slabs, or go back up the slabs and down True Big back to Buck Island. You can also take a nice hike around Buck Island Lake to the stream on the other side, or hike up a trail to a couple more lakes upstream......or sit in camp and chill.

A perfect 'Con trip is one day to Buck Island, 2 days camping at the lake, then a day to drive out to lake Tahoe. If you end up camping at Rubicon Springs, you can drive out to Tahoe and drive home in a day. Leave early Wed morning, like 7:00ish, and drive all the way home that day. You'll camp next to the river at Rubicon Springs, so can still go swimming, just not like in the lake. We've driven home all the way from there plenty of times, and on a Sunday when the traffic is bad getting out of Lake Tahoe. On a Wed it would be better.

Have a great trip!

I like this idea! definitely wanna have as much fun and wheel time as possible.

I am up for anything as long as I can be home by Wednesday night. If other guys want to stay longer and I have to bow out early, that wouldn't bother me.

i would love to make this trip but money and kids and school and time.. gotta see whats doable u know

I just got my schedule and i might be in for this trip. Dont know if ill be able to stay til Wed though. Ill prob have to head back tues. I just have a couple more small hurdles....One of them being getting my Hooptie ready. I was a little unclear about what was going on with the camping situation. Is everyone just pitching in for one big site?

For Saturday we have a group site near Union Valley Resevior, which is about 15 miles from the trail head. It holds 50 people and 12 vehicles.

The rest of the trip, camping will be on the trail.

I hope you can make it. This trip is getting better every day.

it be cool if you could make it AL.

I tend to agree with Goatman in that you cannot spend too much time on that trail, or in that area. I've spent a lot of time in Crystal Basin without ever even getting on the trail.

But, since there is some concern about being there too long... I had a couple thoughts...

We could get the group site one more night and start the trail Monday. Then we could spend Sunday around Union Valley Resevior.

Bassi Falls trailhead is adjacent to the group campsite.

It's a short drive to the trail head (like minutes), and a 1/2 mile or so hike to the falls. Pretty cool spot. Also, if anyone likes to shoot skeet or general target shooting, the area is all National Forest land with pretty much open shooting. There is also fishing, hiking, etc. in the area.

So, if you want, we could spend a day there.

On the other hand, we could start the trail on Sunday like planned, and if we finish quick enough, we could hit another trail in the area.

Someone mentioned Fordyce... I've never been, but I know it's a pretty serious trail. Not sure what the capability of all the rig coming along are so I am not sure if that would work.

Deer Valley trail is nearby. It's fun and not too difficult. It's like 8 miles and can be run in 3-4 hours. If your rig can make it through the Con, Deer Valley should be no problem. You can camp along that trail as well.

I'm sure there are other trails as well in the area.

Of course, we may want to just keep an extra day in case we require any trail repairs (knock on wood!).

Just wanted to share some thougts... what you guys think?

I would prefer to hit the trial Sunday and get through it by Tuesday. If we then wanted to spend the next day and 1/2 hitting other trails then that would be cool. That would allow guys he have to get back for work, etc. to head back Tuesday evening and the rest could stay as long as desired. I'm still not 100% sure if I can stay longer or not. The guy who will be my co-pilot is still waiting on his work schedule and my baby sitter can only stay through Wednesday evening.

Quick question: Is anybody towing their rig up their? My uncle has an F-250 with trailer he said I can use if I wanted to. If everyone is driving their rig, then I will probably do the same. I don't want to slow down the group, but I will take him up on his offer if others are towing.

Towing up there can be a challenge in regards to logistics. The trail is not an out 'n back trail (although it can be done this way). I would suggest going in at the dam and coming out at Tahoe so if you tow, then park at the dam and you have to go all the way around and get back to your tow rig when you are done (a heafty detour).

Thanks for the info. I guess that answered my question. Then it would seem that I will be driving my rig.

i wish i had a two rig. but it seems that the most logical thing to do is to drive up. should be a good time though. :)

Avery, you coming?
