Rubicon trip for 2010????

All I need is to replace my front shocks, install my rear quarter guards, tune my cb, and replace my rear wheel studs (too short). I have all the parts it's just the time I now need to find. I should have no problems getting this stuff done by the time we leave.

Same here brad. IM pretty sure ill be checking all my hoses and fluids before we head up bot other than that i dont see why my heep wouldnt be able to make the 8 hour drive.

You guys will have a great time! One of my favorite trails. Heres what you got coming!

Big Silver Group Campground is available for $54 for Saturday night.

It's got 10 individual camp spots. Can hold 12 vehicles and up to 50 people... should be plenty big. As far as I can tell, it does not require Friday night stay. Vault toilets, but no running water. About 15 miles from trail head.

Big Silver group is a new facility built along the Union Valley Bike Trail in the Eldorado National Forest. The campground is situated in a Ponderosa pine forest on the north side of Big Silver Creek. Union Valley Reservoir is only a 5-minute bike ride from the campground. The paved trail stretches for several miles both north and south of the campground and is accessible by wheelchair. The facility has vault toilets, fire rings, group grills, garbage service and paved parking spurs (between 25-50 feet long). These meet accessibility standards. The facility does not have piped water or electricity. A store with a restaurant, gas, and phone is within 10 miles. Awesome! thanks for getting the ball rolling on this trip. Since i have never been it limits me to the planning. I take it you have done the trail before?

I've never done the trail in a Jeep. I did large parts of it on a dirt bike, but that was in the late 1980's, so I won't remember much of it. I have spent a lot of time in the Crystal Basin area where the trail starts, and a lot of time in Tahoma where the trail ends... so I can get us there and home.

Once you're on the trail itself it's pretty easy to find your way from what I understand.

So, I guess I should go ahead and reserve the group campsite?

sure! now is the 54 bucks gonna be for how ever many of us show up? if so we can split the cost so its not so much for one person. I have never been out that way so i hope we make it and back in one piece. :P

can we start a head count as well? i wanna get an idea on who wants to go and who can make it.

$54 covers up to 50 people and 12 vehicles.

I'd expect more like 6-8 people and 3-4 vehicles based on this thread... so that would be like $7-9 each person.

If we get individual sites, they are $22 each night, 2 night minimum on weekend, so $44 + reservation fee, so $53. They can hold up to 6 people, but only 2 vehicles... so we would likely need 2.

Group site looks like the cheapest, and if the group gets larger, we can all fit in one place.

Im planning on bringing my son out with me. he's 7 years old. I just hope his mom is ok with him going with me.

Ok... I reserved Big Silver Group Campground for June 26th for one night.

Now that it's official... I better get my Jeep ready!

Cool! Split 4 ways for sure.

So what other gear are we looking to need? Toilet? Permits?

Toilets... we'll need something for when we are on the trail. Wag bags or something like that? We need to pack it out.

Permits... we will probably have to pick up a fire permit at the ranger station, if fires are allowed at that time. The ranger station is on the way up. They will also have road closure maps, but I doubt that will impact us.

Other gear. Recovery gear for sure. Tools and spare parts. And, whatever camping gear we'll need.

As for fire wood, you can generally collect downed wood from the National Forest, so maybe a small chain saw? I keep an axe in my rig. Or we can bring wood?

Not sure what else...?

I'm in, so we can split it 5 ways. Justin and Vince also showed interest in joining us, which may mean we will be splitting it 7 ways. I will try to get a for sure "yes" or "no" by the end of the week from the two of them.
