riding mowers

This isn't really true. The same models they sell at Home Depot are sold at independent JD dealers. I agree to avoid Home Depot anyway, because you will get far superior service at most JD dealers. In the case you have a warranty issue, Home Depot will send you to the local JD shop, and they won't be as willing to help you out as if you bought the tractor from them.

The models at home depot are usually the cheapy 100 series, the John Deeres are pretty much just toys until you get into the X series which I have only seen at full line John Deere dealers. The only benefit to buying anything like this from home depot is that home depot generally offers a full one year warrenty on top of what ever the manufacturers offer. However, in the northeast if your mower breaks under the home depot warrenty they don't send it to the factory for service, it gets sent to a company called Altaquip that does all the warrenty work until it is out of homedepots 1 year warrenty. So getting service can suck because if you have any issues you have to deal with homedepot, who in turn then deals with someone else, so you really lack the communication and direct service that you would get from a dealership.

As for those Dixie Choppers they make nice Lawn Mowers but are limited to doing strictly that, Mowing Lawns, at least with a quality riding mower you can get PTO's and useful attatchments such as Front Loaders, Tillers, Aerators, etc..

Let me fix it for ya ... they make outstanding Lawn Mowers ...

Depends on what he's looking for I guess ... and maybe the semantics involved .... Around here, if someone is talking about a "Riding Mower", they are looking for a piece of equipment to mow grass. If they are looking for something to till gardens, or use a snow blower, they refer to it as a "Garden Tractor".

At one time, all that was available for taking care of lawns were "Riding Mowers" or "Lawn Tractors". Many home owners only had a need for mowing since most no longer have a need for gardening, etc. The art of mowing has come a long way in the development of mowing equipment, hence the style of mower similar to the Dixie Chopper. Notice these mowers will mow several acres an hour whereas a Riding mower would do well to do a half acre per hour. If the orignal poster has a "yard the size of a football field", maybe this is a better option. And BTW, Dixie Choppers will pull trailers, aerators, and rollers.

All the previous posts are assuming he needs all these implements ... I did not read that in his original post. If he actually does, you guys are right on track for him.

Depends on how much time you want to spend in the yard mowing ...

Les

PS: John Deere makes a similar style mower to the Dixie Chopper ...

Guess I lucked out on the mower department, I cut my 1.2 acre with a beat up cheap old Crapsman, only cost me 250 bucks, well used...;-) it is junk, but its small enough to get around some of the tight spots in my yard, and I don't feel bad about beating on it, after spend time to look at some new "Lawn tractors" (all crap imo) and not having the bucks to get a good machine I went the cheap route and found this used thing. Parts can be found, but you have to do some legwork at times, luckily I have a few mower shops around that just about give away old parts. All I've had to do so far was change the oil, spark plug , belts and battery, and clean up the deck, this winter I will pul the deck and overhaul it, sharpen blades, etc.

Spend the time to get something that can handle what you want to cut, and if you buy it new get ready to open up your wallet....

You guys know Jeeps ... but you don't know $hit about mowers. :D If you are serious about mowing grass, get a Dixie Chopper.

Dude, grass is my life. I know more about grass than I will ever know about Jeeps. Dixies are overpriced go carts that are focused on speed of cut, not quality of the unit.

GO TORO or GO HOME!

There's only one "Dude" man :peace:

Toro ... good products ... no problem there. Dixie Chopper is the cadillac ... a lot of commercial lawn services use these. They mow like a house afire! Quality is there my man ...

PS: Ever thought of changing your name to "Flower Top"? ... :greensmok:

Toro is by far the best for the price. Deeres have japanese motors in them and are very expensive to repair. You have to buy liquid cooled because they make the front so enclosed that the air cooled have overheating problems.

If you are only mowing grass Toro makes a ZTR that is great. If you want more go for the Toro/Wheelhorse (Toro bought Wheelhorse several years ago, along with Lawnboy) lawn tractor. Always get the largest hp motor you can aford with the smallest deck you can get by with, your tractor will last longer.

Durango = $1000.00 has been beat to crap
Jeep = $5.00 Is a piece of crap

So his mowers only cost $1005.00?

I bet the cost more than that!

And I thought your mommy mowed your lawn, she does everything else for you.
