It seems to me that you'd have less chance of trapping air in the cooler with the lines mounted horizontally. I'm not sure if that's even an issue but it's an easy thing to do just in case.
I've seen it done a lot with the inputs pointing down, but I also heard that they shouldn't be pointing down. I contacted hayden which sells a similar cooler and they advised against pointing them down. I'm unsure, so I thought it best to point them horizontal.
I’m at the same point but going a different direction. I have a Tru-Cool Max LPD4921 that is going behind the bumper with some fans. Let us know how it turns out.
I don't know about the caddy, but a stock cooler on the XJ has its input/output pointing horizontal. Besides that is an all together different design of a cooler than the plate and fin cooler I am using.
well if we are going to get all semantic... the soft lines meet the cooler from the bottom, and then the cooler lines go up and sideways, in other words it attaches from the bottom

The hoses have no problem going any direction, nor does it matter on that type of cooler that much. The plate and fin allow several different passages for the fluid to flow and there is a possibility that air can get trapped in it, or part of it.
