Removing transfercase, what's the secret?

For putting the new one in, get under the jeep, roll the case onto your chest and just push it up and in.

This is how I took mine out - was little worried as I didn't know how heavy it was going to be - glad to know it can go back the same way...great excersize working on a Jeep - I can feel it in all my limbs today!

Had mine out a few times, definitely easier witht eh exhaust flange disconnected and pushed out of the way. Stubby 9/16" wrench is your friend, never had any luck trying to fish a wobbly-socket on an extension in there. It is a pretty easy bench-press to get it back in, the only time I was thankful for that stupid aluminum t-case.

While we're on the topic of removing the transfercase, does anybody have the bearing part numbers for an NP242 or are these only obtainable from the dealers? I'm especially interested in the front and rear output shaft bearings.

Well, its out! ...but I had to remove that section of the exhaust running past the transfercase.....

....After I've taken the portion of the exhaust out I could have kicked myself that I didn't do it earlier - with it removed it's as easy as pie to get to all the bolts with normal tools.

That's exactly what I ended up doing. It's just a short section of the exhaust that has to come out. Mine is an 2001, yours is a 2000, I suspect the exhaust configuration may be different on earlier models.

dude, just drop the tranny, thats what i did when i installed my 241. That is one HEAVY b*tch

Yep, it is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the stock 231.
This is how I installed mine....hydraulic lift cart, very handy.

Mine? I took it out to replace some bearings. After I've removed both the front and rear output shaft bearings - they were both rough, so I hope I'll have a bit of a quieter ride afterwards. Oh, and for what it's worth here's some of the bearing part no's. I've got to: front output shaft – NSK 6207, rear output shaft – NSK 6206 and front pilot/needle bearing – INA SCE 2416.
