What morons, and the people standing on the rear while the guy is tugging that hard are just idiots.
Granted, I wasn't there, but why the heck weren't they trying to pull him backwards, instead of that obviously bad angle?
Sure, you can use an axle as a tow-point.
Although if a Stupid-dudy would have hooked to the bumper I bet it would have ripped it in two also.
I could be wrong, but I think they attached to the passenger side bumper tow hook? It appears that because of the side pull, and the front passenger tire was buried in some compact mud, the axle stayed in place while the body was pulled. You can see the axle pivot around the passenger tire.

they did try from the other direction, sort of.
and from the passenger side shackle.
