Recent Wheeling, Breakage, and New Tires.

So I did some wheeling a couple weekends ago and I finaly got the pictures from my friend. I ended up having to get trailered home due to broken spider gears.

Getting ready to leave, just trimmed and relocated the front fender flares using most of 53Guy's write up. I lost the front drivers flare on the way to the ride.

Showing the flex, my first spotter almost made me flop, thankfully my other buddy came up and took over.

So then I got hung up a little, both diffs couldn't go anywhere, typical me.

A little gas and brake method led to a very loud crack.

Then the next little mud area, and this guy got stuck without any towhooks.

The next guy trying to pull him out got stuck.

Then I was the next Jeep in the line, but I was in no shape to pull, all that happened was more cracking noises.

I had to take the bypass around the last rock garden, so I had to limp back to the road and just chill out for a while.

A sad day, the first time I had to get trailered home. Luckily my buddy let me throw it on his trailer and I drove his YJ home.

Now the new tires, 33x13.5xR15 on 15x8 4.75 backspacing.

Talk about close fit.

Wow, that sucks about the gears. Those tires look a little close for comfort in the rear. Did you at least put a locker in during the repair?

those trails look like Voluntown CT

was that where you were at?

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, I can pinpoint every spot on the trail from those pics.

Ya that rear tire looks closer on that picture than it really is, its about an inch or so away from the tire. Close but it works.

I didn't put a locker in because I didn't really have the money for it, and the only cost of the repair was $12 for a new bearing and the gear oil. I got some extra spider gears from my shop and did it all in my driveway. I looked around for some axles with 4.10s but the junkyard wanted $375 for a D30 with 4.10s.

The spider gears exploded from too much strain. I was hung up so I tried applying brake while I gave it some gas to try and lock up the spinning tires, sort of like a poor mans locker to gain a little traction. I found a bunch of indents on the cover where pieces hit.

Sorry, forgot to say, Toyo Open Country MT's

Yep, Lakeview, this was where I was going to sit and wait for AAA, until they called me back and it would take over an hour.

I wish they were that low here, one place I called wanted $750, I actually laughed on the phone and told him that was crazy. He said that included all the steering, I asked if that was the same steering linkage he wouldn't sell me off a Grand (beefy tie rod) and he just asked if I wanted it or not.

How are the tires on/offroad so far?

Time for "TBM" (the bumper mod) on your front.

KOs suck in the mud don't they?

93 what phone service are you talking about, I didn't notice any service out there. Naw Verizon really sucked out there.

So far the tires are pretty quite, not much louder if at all than the BFG's. They have been good in the rain too. I unfortunately haven't gotten a chance to take them offroad yet cause I've been too busy. I need to trim the back more and bumpstop, I don't want to cut these up. I'll be leaving for South Dakota tomorrow so I won't get a chance to drive it until the 30th.

I'm hoping to build up a bumper this summer if I ever get any time. I need to replace that front fascia soon too, the fiberglass doesn't really like trees that much, nor does that sheet metal bumper.

Ya, the KO's have been a great tire for me and have gotten me many places, even through the mud. But I have definietly had times that I have cursed the KO's for getting caked with crap, like the time I slid off the side of a hill in the snow into a tree, to name one. It was time for a more aggressive and bigger tire.

And I forgot to mention, my other latest addition before the tires. Thanks Ghost, got it in the mail a while ago, just haven't shown it off yet.

you can always go buy some longer studs and a cheap 1/4 inch spacer for a cheap way to get a little more room for those wheels. Or heck just go buy the spacers and see if they fit

those tires look awesome man. sucks about them spider gears. we got to go out wheeling sometime man. i just back from VT and did some wheeling.

Tires going to rub when you're aired down....?

How come you didnt get some rims with more BS?
They shouldn't rub when aired down, the tire buldges at the ground.

I got the rims a while ago when I had my old tires on it, and I just never replaced them.

Ya Alex, we should, I did a little wheeling in VT a couple weekends ago, great place.

Verizon for me is very spotty out there. Once i got stuck out there on an easy trail, alone and it was raining. Had to walk 3 or 4 miles in pitch black pouring rain in 40 degrees and walked until i found service. It sucked.

I really like the Looks of those Toyos.

I wouldn't worry about the clearance. With my 8.8 and my rims my tires are just as close if not closer. I have had some rubbing before when aired down but nothing to worry about. I have had these tires for 2.5 years and there isn't even a sign of it on the sidewalls. Its the other side of my sidewalls that keeps getting cut LOL.
