I have a 95 Xj, been having problems with the lock in the rear hatch, i lock it all the time but for some reason it always get unlocked on its own. Its almost like someone else has a key and unlocks it to screw with me. Anyone else having that problem? I know i heard about some problems with the lock mechanism failing so i lubed the living hell out of it, didnt know if maybe that could have somehting to do with it. Thanks for any help

Do you have power locks?

If you do, when you unlock your doors using power, and lock using power, I bet the rear hatch power lock is bent or not working properly.

My power lock solenoid in the rear does not work at all - bad wiring.

There may be too much lube on the white plastic slider that controls the actual locking. Or the plastic may be cracked. Also the finger that slides at the base of the mechanism can get out of alignment. It sounds too loose rather than to tight, but then I'm in Southern California and don't have to deal with rust, etc.

My 96 has a broken hatch and lock that I am waiting to replace with a "new" hatch as soon I get the it painted. You are right, the locks are fragile. I have swaped a in a few temporary locks until I can get the new double sided lock re-keyed.

so.. maybe a spray or 2 of brakekleen to get rid of some of that lube? or just let it work it itself out? I just dont live in the greatest area and i dont always remember to check the rear hatch, its a pain in the $@#. Thanks guys

When you say you lubed it, did you actually take the panel off, and remove the latch mechanism and lube its innards? If not, I'd try that, because it's very poorly sealed, and rusts internally. I'm guessing that when you turn the key, it is not fully toggling the lock mechanism in the latch owing to rust and seizure.

I never had problems from overlubing mine. It is usually the opposite problem.

it's not too hard to remove the panel, once you do, you'll have a great view of the locking mechanism. I removed my panel in about 5 minutes. 15 minutes if your cordless drill batteries are dead. ;)

where in DE are you? I'm just outside Prices Corner.
