Guys,

I have a 2001 XJ and need to get a custom built driveline so I am debating on using the RE1801 hack n tap SYE or the RE1811 heavy duty SYE. Do any of you have any suggestions? (pro/cons). I go offroading but I don't perform extreme heavy duty stuff like rock crawling or heavy muddin'.

Another question...if going with the RE1811..would it be cheaper to look for a NP231 X-case from a 89' (or any earlier year, for that matter) to gain the output shaft used in those years and just swap it out and then get the new driveline built?

thanks

LOL, no its not worth swapping out your t-case for a 12 year older unit (or any for that matter). Go HD, I personally can't say anything bad about the hack n tap though.

I can however say I have had my AA HD SYE since 30k miles and now have 72k miles with zero problams ever. Look to spend about $500 for a Tom Woods ds and AA HD SYE, other than that I jave no clue what REs "HD" would be.

What transfer case do you have? If you have a 231 then you can go with the SYE replacement kit...if you have the 242 then you are stuck with the hack and tap...Personally I have the hack and tap and also have had zero problems...

peace

The hack and tap is a great kit and plenty strong. Cheap for the 96+ XJ's and easy to install. Most of us local guys run the hack and tap with 33's up to 37's and have broken many things, but never once a hack and tap. Most problems are during install, but that is due to people getting in a hurry and breaking the tap in the hole because they don't folow proper procedure, then they blame their screw up on the product. Here is an install writeup from Dirk's (www.dpgoffroad.com) site: http://www.dpgoffroad.com/rubiconsye.htm

You can get the JB HD unit for under 200 now,its well worth the "little" extra money! The hack-n-tap kit didnt work on my 2000,it took the HD unit to be perfect.Ive had my JB unit for 3 years now,its sweet!

is the STD HD SYE shorter than the stock output shaft on the 231?
The only thing shorter is their new kit,but the std kit is still shorter than a hack-n-tap or stocker!

due to this, the install part (not drilling a hole into the shaft), and the fact that the HD SYE is only about $50 more than the hack n tap, all indication point to the JB conversion sye. thanks all.

I just put a H/T in my 01XJ so far it's great!!I also put a Driveshaft from High Angle Driveshaft,Got them both From DPG Offroad for 395.00 The ds is a heavy duty 1ton unit..The H/T was only $80.00 and the ds was only $35 more then the RE shaft. It also has a high angle machined cv..
