re-gear questions

Hey guys,

So with my tax return i'm gonna re gear my ride.
I have a couple of questions before i do it...
1. Do I need to get a sye or can i stay on stock driveline for right now?
2. Are 4.56s to low for a DD (5spd manuel, 33s)?
3. Will a detroit true trac in the rear cause me problems DDing it?

Thanks
John

1. SYE has nothing to do with gearing, more a factor of lift and driveshaft angles. Need more info from you on year, lift height, etc...
2. IMHO, 4.56 are perfect for 33's/manual, if you don't mind staying under 70 on the highway. I happily ran 4.30 (oddball) for years with that setup.
3. you won't even know the trutrac is there on the pavement.

Hey Grin,

You mentioned 4.56's being perfect for 70mph and below for 33's. As I DD mine currently (and will for awhile most likely) would another gearset be better? Such as 4.10's? Or maybe something in between?

The reason I ask is it's 22+ miles, one way, to work everyday and it's all highway so I'm thinking 4.56's might be a little too deep.

4.10's would be ideal for you then
if youre 3.07's id swap in some axles out of an auto (3.55) and see how you like that

Use the following to do a side by side comparison of the stock gear ratio and tire size vs. any combination of gears and tire sizes.

http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Click on the CALCULATE button after you make changes in the individual column.

Remember that the idea is to get your vehichle as close to the OE powerband as possible.

Pay particular attention to the charts at the bottom of the page relating to RPM's.

Thanks for all the replys guys!
My specs are 4.5" lift the jeep is a 95
I'm getting my gears set a colorado axle and gear on 64th and sheridan, the guy quoted me at 1800 for everything.... idk if thats a good price or not

Thanks for that link Frank! That was great to see a side by side comparison.

If I input the correct components I have, NV3550 Close Ratio (I think it's close ratio) and and an NP231, while running 305/70/16 tires, I'm showing that I can go a little over 80mph in 5th gear at 2500 RPM. That isn't too terribly bad since I rarely hit 80mph anyways.

Thanks again.

holy jesus lord almighty!!!!

NO NO NO!
you can spend a THIRD of that!!!

X2 -- Mike's not kidding, professional locals like Frank and Josh will literally be third of that.

As for your SYE question, a 95 at 4.5 is the grey area as far as vibes go, old enough that it is less sensitive to the angles, but high enough that the ujoints are less than happy. If you wheel at all, I'd start budgeting for an SYE and a dual cardan driveshaft.... with the money you could save on gear installs you would more than have it covered.

Your very welcome and I'm glad to see you took the time to use it. GrimmJeeper did an awesome job with that page.

seriously tho. do yourself the favor, and get it done by one of those guys. great service, good parts and youll save over a grand. its a win win man

I see you're in Arvada. Would be well worth it for you to load the axles on a trailer and bring em' to the Springs at that price.I'm sure Josh does good work, and I've used Frank Z to gear me up. Top notch work and fast as grease lightning!!

1800....??? :scared:

Listen to one of these guys! I paid 3200 to re-gear, But i got a jeep with it :D
Josh also does 8.8's which is his specialty! He can do lockers, as well as gears, also any other fab you may need! Frank is an awesome guy as well. Haven't bought any of his products but have installed/seen in person quite a few things! Does great work and is also a great guy to deal with. Really its worth the extra maybe 1000-1200 dollars in savings since you were looking at spending 1800.

I can also handle your regear, locker installs, axle swaps, etc and I'm just North of Denver in Firestone (think Longmont but right off of I-25). LMK if you need a hand. For what its worth I'd also recommend Frank, he does good work and keeps his work area tidy (very important when dealing with bearings) too.

cripes, now I heard frank called "fast as greased lightening" and "tidy" all in the same thread. I've got to meet this guy, he ain't who I though he was...
