Re Gear instead of new tires

I have decided to re gear instead of buying tires right now.

Currently I run 245/75R16 Goodyear MTRs (31s)

I want to re gear, but not sure which ratio. I plan on running 285/75R16 (33s) at a later time.

01' XJ limited 4.0L HO Auto 3:55 gears

Daily driving 75%
Highway driving 15%
Off Road 10%

Was looking at 4:27 but not available for the Dana30. Is 4:56 too low, or should I go with 4:11s

Anybody running either setup, and what would you do I you could do it over again. I do not plan on ever going bigger than 33s.

Thanks

How often do you drive on the highway?? I have 4.56s now, had 33s(285s), stepped down to 32s(265s) for the winter. I LOVE IT with 32s. I run 2750 rpms at 75 mph on the highway. If you need to cruise much faster than that I would be hesitant to recommend the 4.56s while you still have 31s. If you don't do the highway thing much, I think you'll be just fine with 4.56s and 31s till you step up in size. I also have an '01 with the auto, so there are less variable to take into account between us like different overdrive ratios over the years and how fresh the motor is. HTH.

Edit - BTW, I don't think that 4.56s will be too low for 33s, in fact I wish I could go a little deeper for the 33s, but alas it's not possible. Also, just re-read your post and saw the 15% figure for highway driving. So I guess you need to decide how fast you really need/want to go on the highway. I used to cruise at ~80mph everywhere I went. With the lower gears I'm willing to sacrifice that 5mph and watch everyone pass me(I'm a "young driver" and it bothers me when people pass me, immature I know :D ). Also, I average about 15mpg no matter if I'm on the highway, around town, or what have you. However if I drop down to 60-65 that figure jumps to about 17-18mpg. once again, HTH

4.56

i have 4.10's with 31's/auto/daily driver...told by 3 gearshops that i should go with 4.56's ...didn't listen thinking they'd be too low...wish i would have

Thanks,

I have decided on the 4:56s. Highway driving not a major concern as most of the highway driving is in the winter. (ice, snow heading up the the ski mountains)

I will also be changing to 265/75R16 all terrians (31.8") for winter driving.

Thanks

You will LOVE 265 ATs and 4.56s. That's the exact combo I'm running now and it is sweet! The only problem I have is if I don't be real gentle with the gas on snow/ice the tires break loose really easily. Then again I only have 2wd at the moment, and the ARB in the rear isn't hooked up. :(

Everyone is different, but I have the manual tranny (standard 3.07's in the axles) and went to 4.88's for the 35's I have in storage. I haven't gotten around to trimming the fenders, yet, and have been driving around with 31's (and 4.88's). I love this combination. The nearest freeway is over 100 miles away, so high speed cruising isn't a priority. I'm really concerned that 4.88's won't be low enough for the 35's!

The number one complaint I read about is people wishing that they had gone to lower (numerically higher) gears. I'm sure it happens, but I can't remember a post where someone wished they hadn't gone so low with their gearing.
